Senior Girls Volleyball

Interschool Sport report held on Tuesday 18th February at the Dandenong Volleyball centre.

After a series of lunchtime and after school training sessions set up by Mrs Boxell, our senior girls were excited to head out on their first sports day for the year.

A common theme amongst majority Year 12 girls on the day was “this is our last year playing together so let’s enjoy it”.  South Oakleigh was represented by 18 girls split equally across 2 teams. Both of our teams played 5 tough matches against the likes of John Monash SC, Wellington SC, Wheelers Hill SC and Brentwood.   Our first two fixtures were the toughest against the experienced players of John Monash and Wellington.

These two teams would end up playing off in the grand final. Our girls seem to get better as the day went on with both teams recording wins against the other schools. As such, both teams made it to the 3rd v 4th play-off games. Our Team B group did especially well by winning their last 3 games including the 3rd position play-off.  The girls played with lots of energy and comradery, the girls played their best throughout the day.

Well done, Girls!

Monash Swimming Carnival

On Thursday 27 February, South Oakleigh College took 29 students to the Monash Swimming Carnival at Aquanation in Ringwood. Despite coming up against some much larger squads, every student who entered the water competed with fantastic effort and determination.

Congratulations to Ethan Walker and Aryan Patel, who won the 50m freestyle and 50m butterfly respectively, and will advance to the Regionals. A special mention also to Jesse Sadolji, who finished 2nd in five races.

All students who attended are to be commended for representing the school with great pride and enthusiasm.

A big thank you to Mrs Wallis and Mrs Boxall for their assistance in helping the day run smoothly and to Mr Katsianos for presenting ribbons to participants.

Lawn Bowls Report

On Friday 28 February, three intrepid students from South Oakleigh College braved the mild and rainy conditions to play lawn bowls.

Sam Pigden, Jy Sneesby, and Ben Wallace formed the lone South Oakleigh team, facing off against three teams from Brentwood. The atmosphere at Glen Waverly Bowls Club was relaxed. Club members were enjoying giving the younger players some help on the finer points of lawn bowls.

After some practice ends, the competition started in earnest. Our boys first faced Brentwood #1 team, who were well practiced, took an early and significant lead in the first two ends of the match. In the third round though, Sam, Jy, and Ben found their form and raced from over 100 points behind to catch up. The final end was incredibly tight, with only 20 points being the difference. At the final tally Brentwood had managed to save their hide by only 5 points.

Second match was against Brentwood # 2 team. Now that Sam, Jy, and Ben were warmed up, this was a much tighter match. The boys kept a quick pace, and kept the pressure on right up to the end; winning comfortably.

Overall it was a very enjoyable day. Our special thanks to Laurie Browell from Glen Waverly Bowls Club for organising and running the event. For those students who are interested in joining in on the lawn bowls fun, there is talk of a local inter-school competition. If you are interested in either an after-school or weekend lawn bowls competition, contact Mr Curtis.

YEAR 9 / 10 TENNIS

South Oakleigh College fielded two teams in the intermediate boys tennis competition held last Friday 7 March at the Wantirna Tennis Club.

Even though the boys tried hard all day the best result for the day was a draw against Wheelers Hill College. Brentwood College were just too strong going through the day undefeated.

Well done to the boys, whose effort and sportsmanship was exemplary.

YEAR 9/10 VOLLEYBALL

The Year 9 and 10 Girls and Boys travelled to the State Volleyball Centre in Dandenong for the Inter-school Volleyball competition on Friday 6 March.

Both teams were eager to play, and had shown a lot of enthusiasm in the weeks leading up to the competition, requesting to train at every opportunity.

All teams competed against Brentwood, Wellington, John Monash and Wheelers Hill in a very competitive round robin

South Oakleigh represented the school with respect and each time set high expectations for themselves.

Whilst we only managed a couple of wins on the day, most matches were very competitive, with some exciting sets that were close throughout. Every student demonstrated fantastic determination, enthusiasm and pride. This was evident in the way that their skills, technique and teamwork developed with every match.

The students were excellent in the way that they represented the school in this competition and the commitment they showed in their training to prepare for the event.

YEAR 9 / 10 BASEBALL

Year 9 and 10 students representing SOC were involved in an inter-school event at the Glen Waverley Baseball Courts on Friday 6 March. The students were very enthusiastic about the day, the event and their practice toward their matches. We played two schools as official matches on the day. The first was against Wellington High School which we won, while the second one was against Brentwood Secondary College which we lost. We came second in the official set of matches that were played over two sessions through the morning. Overall, good team work with plenty of coaching from Andre DeVries throughout the event in terms of organising team members and deciding on player positions and scoring of points.
