Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM)
During STEM, the students used a Makey Makey Kit. Makey Makeys are an electronic invention, tool and toy that allows users to connect everyday objects to computer programs. Using a circuit board, alligator clips and a USB cable, the students used closed loop electrical signals through the Makey Makey to send the computer a keyboard stroke when touched. After creating their closed loop and attaching various buttons to the Makey Makey, the student saw if they could play a game using the Makey Makey.
Discovery Centre
The Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge for 2019 has now commenced at SFX, in recognition of the importance of reading for literacy development. It is not a competition but a personal challenge for students to read a set number of books by 6th September 2019. It is not compulsory, but optional for students in Years 1 and 2 to read/share the required 30 books. Students from Year 3 to 6 are expected to complete the challenge and read the minimum 15 books or more. We read a number of books in DC each week and teachers also read books in classrooms, so together with student reading this number of 15 books should be achievable. All students should have now received a letter containing their username and password and additional information.
The onus is on students to add the books they read. They will be shown how to do this at school, and also given some time to add books, but they will also need to log on at home to complete this task. To view the book lists and for more information please go to: www.education.vic.gov.au/prc. Or alternatively come in and have a chat with me on a Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday. Good luck.
Book of the Week
Last week our Book of the week was “Diary of a awesome friendly kid” / by Jeff Kinney. This spin off is written from the perspective of Rowley Jefferson (Greg Heffley’s best friend), who acts as Greg’s biographer. It is already promising to be as popular as the original series.
This week our featured book is “Bad guys episode 9 - the big bad wolf” by Aaron Blabley. In this latest installment of this best-selling series, readers will delve into Mr. Wolf’s backstory and meet his infamous father, the Big Bad Wolf.
Mother’s Day Display
To celebrate all mothers we have a Mother’s Day display in the Discovery Centre with lots of great books focussing on the positive impact of mothers in children’s lives. The Preps in particular have loved borrowing these to share with their Mums. We also made some special bookmarks to give our Mums.
The Very Hungry Caterpillar
The very hungry caterpillar has crawled into the Discovery Centre, and is living behind the circulation desk. We have a new display featuring this classic book and other titles by Eric Carle. It is a colourful addition to the Discovery Centre.
Happy reading,
Mrs. Johnson
