Design Technology and Food Studies

Semester 2 is in full swing now and we would like to welcome the new students and remind them to come to class equipped.

For Food Studies Year 7 and 8, students are required to purchase a Food Studies Booklet from the General Office as soon as possible please. Year 9 and 10 students are reminded to have a display folder, exercise book/folder and writing material and computer. Please bring a container to the production classes so you can take your products home to share.

In this newsletter we are featuring Senior Technology Classes.

Design Technology

Design Technology has varied offerings at Year 10 that cover material based subjects, CAD/CAM based subjects and STEM based subjects. Semester 1 saw Product Design - Wood students making a pine cabinet that reflected a historical design movement. The Advanced Electronics and Programing students built circuits using Arduino electronic kits with an emphasis on programming the kit to produce autonomous electrical circuits. In Semester 2 we now have students working in Product Design – Metal, Digital Design and Manufacture, and Advanced Robotics and Coding. These electives provide an important grounding for successful completion of the VCE subjects Product Design and Technology and Systems Engineering.

The current Year 10 Metal Class have designed a Weathervane and are in the first phase of cutting out their letters and images. During the project students get the chance to shape and finish sheet metal, use the lathe to centre and face round bar and they get to use some welding techniques.

Food Studies

Year 10 – Baker’s Toolkit – As described by a Semester 1 student:

Baker’s toolkit was a subject I really looked forward to. I learnt that it wasn’t just about cooking because we looked at things like food science, health, the environment, fairtrade and design. I really enjoyed designing and making my OMG Orange show stopper cake. I practiced the cooking skills I had and learnt new techniques like how to candy orange peel and make a ganache. Aaron

Unit 1 focused on food from historical and cultural perspectives. Students investigated the origins and roles of food through time and across the world. They also looked at Australian Cuisine from Australian Indigenous food prior to European settlement then the following immigration up to current trends.

SACs completed were; A Superfood Breakfast Cereal Design Task (see photos of boxes created ), A Food Lover’s Guide to a country, An Indigenous Food Café Design.

Students Comments Unit 1:

“V.C.E Food Studies is a hands on subject involving both practical and theoretical components. We were given the opportunity each week to improve our independent cooking skills. We were taught a broad range of cooking techniques and learnt about the history of food.” Cailtlyn

“We learnt about different cultures. We cooked amazing foods from all over the country and world and explored our heritage.” Shae

Unit 2 -  Students will investigate food systems in contemporary Australia. Some of the focus issues; food security with Australia’s growing population, environmental issues with plastic packaging and ethical concerns with our food production and palm oil and animal rights.

Unit 3 -  Students looked at the science of food with the topics; digestion, food allergies and intolerances, and food contamination. Food choice, health and well-being were investigated and practical skills applied to create a range of healthy meals for children and families.

SACs completed were; Food Truck Design Task and Design a Buddha Bowl.

Unit 4

Students will focus on food issues, challenges and futures with an emphasis on sustainability and ethics. They also will analyse the formation of food beliefs, evaluate a selected food trend, fad or diet and create food products that meet the Australian Dietary Guidelines.
