Welcome Vaughan Patullock
After the 3rd week of term our College Careers Advisor, Graeme Crosbie, will be taking some well-earned leave until the end of term. We’ve been fortunate to secure experienced Careers Practitioner, Mr Vaughan Patullock to work together with Greg Bristol, the House Leaders and Learning Area Leaders in his place.
Vaughan was the first Manager of the TEC (VETis program at GOTAFE), has worked with the Universities on an access program called LEAP and has previously been involved in careers at Kyabram SC and Ringwood. For the past 3 weeks he’s been working closely with Graeme preparing for VTAC and Year 10 course selection.
Year 10’s Course Selection (Choosing Yr 11 courses for 2019)
Over the last couple of school weeks (this term and last), Graeme Crosbie has been meeting with the Year 10’s to help them prepare for course selection next year. All Year 9’s to 12’s have active accounts on the Wanganui Careers website (www.wanganuiparkcareers.com). In the secure student area of this they can access tools to help them understand their interests, strengths and values and how these may align with certain careers or training options. There they can (amongst other things) complete their Career Action Plan, write and store their resume or develop an online portfolio.
During next Tuesday(31st July) once again he’ll meet with them, together with Jon Lee from VETis at GOTAFE, to detail the course options available. This will explain VCE, VCAL, VETis as well as School Based Apprenticeships and Traineeships.
Every Year 10 will be allocated a counsellor with whom they will meet (and who parents can contact) over the coming weeks.
That evening, Tuesday 31st July at 7:30, Parents are invited to attend an information session in the Senior Learning Centre where we will explain all of the options available and how your child will be supported to make the best decision for them.
On Tuesday 21st August we will be holding the Year 10 Course Submission Day. This day is student-free (for Year 10’s only) and all parents are asked to book an appropriate appointment time to come in with their child and submit their Year 11 course. Parents and their child will meet with a counsellor and review their Career Action Plan and the course that they have selected for 2019. This will be another opportunity for parents to get clarity over subjects chosen or career paths being planned. Each appointment time slot, from 10 am -12:45 pm or 3:15 pm – 6:00 pm, is 15 minutes long and these can be booked through the main office. Students must attend with their Career Action Plans, Green Sheets and if selecting a VETis subject their proof of identity documentation (Medicare card or birth cert. or passport).
Year 12’s Considering Further Study Options
This term Year 12’s will commence applying for University and TAFE offers that are released early next year. To assist this process parents are encouraged to attend an information session on Wednesday 1st August in the Senior Learning Centre at 7:30 pm. At this we’ll explain:
- Further training options (tertiary and vocational)
- Applying for offers, scholarships, access schemes etc.
- Having a plan that includes back-up options
- Receiving results and offers and how the ATAR works
- How you can support your Yr 12. How we will be supporting them too.
Year 9’s Parent Information Night (Fast Tracking VCE subjects in Yr 10)
Wanganui Park Secondary College will be holding a VCE information evening on Tuesday 31st July in the College’s main Staff Room. The evening will commence at 6.30 pm with a view to be finished shortly after 7.00 pm.
This session aims at providing information on the ‘Early Entry Program’ where a Year 10 student does a Year 11 VCE subject. This provides considerable benefits to the student and is an ideal preparation for VCE. If your child would be interested in choosing this option please consider attending this information session.
Copies of the Senior Course Guide will available for you to borrow. It provides a detailed outline of units available and information on the VCE. An electronic copy of the guide is also available on the College website.
Focus On Open Days
If studying at TAFE or university after school is something you are considering, it is crucial that you attend Open Days. It doesn’t matter if you are in Yr 12, 11 or 10 or a Parent there is a great deal you can learn about yourself and what you might be suited to/enjoy. Throughout the year, vocational and tertiary institutions open their doors to the public and showcase their courses, accommodation, scholarships, pathway courses, student services and their ‘point of difference’.
To get the full list of all Open Days and contacts go to the Calendar on the Wanganui Park Careers website at https://www.wanganuiparkcareers.com/?page=calendar-of-events
At an Open Day, you will be able to:
- Get a feel for the culture of the campus
- Learn about courses and career options
- Undertake campus and accommodation tours led by current students
- Speak directly to student ambassadors and lecturers about the courses or careers you are interested in
- Compare the course area you are interested in at different institutions
- Learn about sports and societies you can join and be active in
- Get course counselling and guidance
- Attend information sessions and workshops
- Watch live demonstrations
- Listen to bands, eat lots of food, participate in activities and have fun!
Don’t just pick a course at an institution without visiting the campus – you potentially will be spending several years studying there and spending tens of thousands of dollars on your course and accommodation. It’s worth making the effort. Once you have identified institutions you would like to visit, found out their open day dates and downloaded their open day programs. Once you have the programs, make a list of the information sessions you would like to attend.
If you have time, try and attend information sessions on topics like pathways, scholarships, accommodation and overseas exchange programs.
If you are unsure what to ask on the day, Victoria University has developed some questions you can ask:
- Are there any prerequisite subjects I need to study for this course?
- What study scores/ATAR do I need to
