VCE CSEN Rally Day: Basketball
HCC won the basketball competition! We played in Division 1 and went undefeated. We conquered Belgrave Heights, a team that was undefeated during the day until they played us in the Grand Final where we won 27-11. There was great leadership and sportsmanship in our team and everyone played very well.
VCE NEWS – HCC Staff appointed as 2018 VCE Examiners
One of the three parts of our vision statement is to ‘Strive for Excellence’. This applies not only to our students, but also to our teachers, as we are continually looking to improve our effectiveness as teachers and help students to achieve their best results.
We are really pleased to be able to acknowledge a number of our VCE teachers who have applied for and have been accepted as VCE examiners for this year. This is both recognition of their standing as teachers of quality, as well as a great opportunity for them to grow in their understanding and knowledge of the course, something that is a great asset to their students and the College.
So, we congratulate the following staff who will be marking VCE exams this year;
- Jeremy Richards – History
- Fairlie Marsland – Legal Studies
- Phong Le – Physics
- Marie Therese Youssef – French written exam and French oral exam
- Tonia Burgess – Studio Arts
- Pam Sanderson has also been an appointed GAT English marker again this year.
Secondary House Athletics
On Tuesday 7 August the Secondary students dressed in their House colours for the school’s annual House Athletics. They participated in different athletic events and took to the track to compete in track and field, all hoping to claim glory for their House. The day was a success with the rain holding off and students giving their best efforts, with many showing some amazing athletic skills. The final scores were indicative of a well fought out day of competition.
We often have one House languishing, but this year there was only around 100 points (a small margin for such a day) between first and last and only 5 points between 2nd and 3rd. Bethel House, however, ended up victors with a great team effort, followed by Carmel, Zion and Tabor. Congratulations Bethel house! The day ended with a staff versus student 8x50m relay race, with the staff showing mercy to our VCE students and letting them win. 😊
A huge thanks to Pete Bunyon, for organising the day and to all the students who participated.

Secondary Snow Sports Day:
Waking up and checking the forecast read 'Mt Baw Baw: Wet and Wild'. Let me say: God is good, because we had beautiful weather and it only started to turn bad (and awful) once we were heading off the slopes and back to the bus. Thank you, Lord!
We had 36 students boarding and skiing with 17 students being 'first-timers' at skiing or boarding. Students had great success in achieving a level where they were getting up and down the slopes and building their skills and enjoyment. Our more experienced skiers also showed the style that could be achieved and challenges you could take on with some more experience on the slopes. It was also a great day of spending time with friends or making new friends through a new found common bond.
Thank you to our staff and parents who were selfless all day (it was a long day!), in making the day run so well and in caring for all our students’ needs. I am already looking forward to 2019 Ski season!

Colossians 3:23 "Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the LORD".

Grade 4 Christian Life
The Grade 4 class have been discussing how to develop a Christian lifestyle. On Tuesday this week, we discussed prayer and learnt Pope Francis’ Five Finger Prayer.
Using their fingers as a guide, students wrote a prayer for their family and friends, teachers and leaders, government, the weak and sick and lastly themselves.
We linked the prayers together to make a prayer chain which will hang in our classroom this week, as a reminder of the importance of prayer.

Grade 6 Christian Life
This week in Christian Life, students from 6P spent time talking about the importance of prayer and God’s desire to spend time with each one of us. We discussed how we cannot only come to God with prayer requests for ourselves but also for our friends.
It was lovely to see the students taking the time to talk about their prayer requests and pray for each other.

Primary Ned's Adventure
Tuesday 7 August was a very exciting day for the whole Primary school at HCC. They got to enjoy a whole period of the Ned Show.
At the Ned show, the presenter talked us through what she and Ned had experienced while travelling around the world, helping those in need by providing them with fresh clean water. The presenter also shared some exciting magic tricks and really entertained us. Kids at the end had the chance to buy bracelets and items to help support those children in need. All the kids had a wonderful time and enjoyed the Ned Show.

Book Week 2018 (20-24 August)
On Tuesday 21 August, we will have a guest speaker, Chris Elkington (an author and puppeteer. Chris is also a former HCC Primary school teacher - welcome back, Chris!) visiting Primary Chapel at 8:45am. Parents are invited as always.
On Friday 24 August, Primary students can come to school dressed as a book character of their choice. They need to bring the book with them, and a gold coin donation will be taken. This will be donated to KCC ‘Emergency Resources’ (ER), an organisation which supports many refugee families and others in need in our local area. These donations will help buy books and gifts for their annual ER Christmas party. A dress-up parade will be held at a special Primary assembly in the morning. Parents are welcome to attend. Please note that students who do not dress up must wear school uniform.
Did you know that...
So keep up that reading! 😊

For 24 years, the National Excellence in Teaching Awards have provided communities with the opportunity to formally recognise and thank outstanding teachers and leaders working within:
• Early Learning Centres;

• Secondary Schools; and
• Special Schools.
The NEiTA awards recognise the importance of the profession, its professional standards and the critical role and impact teachers have on young people’s lives.

Teacher nominations must meet eligibility guidelines and criteria and are submitted by school parents, school councils, parent associations, committees of management, secondary student councils, and community organisations. They are then assessed by an expert panel of educationalists in a two-staged process. Please nominate at https://www.asg.com.au/about-asg/neita
