From the Principal

There is a NAPLAN letter from the teachers to the students is in this issue.

Welcome to IPS

IPS School Values are Respect, Independence, Confidence, Resilience and Persistence.

Hear from some of our Year 6 students about what the school values mean to them.

Mother's Day activities at IPS.

IPS Mother's Day Stall

Thank you to our PFA for making it possible for children to buy their special someone a gift for this coming Mother's Day. I know there are a lot of grateful parents that appreciate not having to brave the shops and how lovely it is for the children to be responsibile for managing their money and choosing a gift themselves.

Mother's Day Breakfast

Our chefs
Our chefs

Thank you to Lance Greenwood and Jo Anderson for organising this event.

Also a huge thank you to our canteen crew Annette and Rita for managing the catering, the coffee van man and of course the merry band of dads who kept the tables clean and kept us COVID safe.

Behind the scenes the action began at 4am.

Annette tells me over 468 people joined us for breakfast so it is little wonder that we ran out of chairs. PFA have been putting on this event for many years (2020 excluded) and this morning was the biggest turn out yet. What a testement to the resilience of the IPS Community and our desire to make 2021 a fabulous year.

Robotics, Coding and Football?

IPS have partnered with Melbourne City Football Club in a fantasic initiative combining robotics with soccer. This week the students began building their soccer robots. Over the next 5 weeks student will spend 45 minutes coding and 45 minutes learning the skills of soccer. All physical activity at school has its benefits but we are always looking for oportunities for our students to try new things. This strange combination of digital learning and PE will "kick goals" in more ways than one.

MCFC run a number of leagues and their home ground is AAMI Park.

Lauren, the coordinator, has said she has a limited number of free tickets to their games so if this interests you please check the fixture at the following link https://www.melbournecityfc.com.au/fixtures#!/t5664 then let me know and i'll forward your details to Lauren and she will email a code to directly download your tickets.

Did you know that Melbourne City Women are the most successful team in the W-League since 2015. Since their debut in the W-League, they won their first three championships in 2016, 2017 and 2018.

Tiny Town - Year 1.

Families, teachers and peers were treated to the culmination of some outstanding work in Year 1.  Students had been learning about their community, local businesses and recreational services in and around our school.  Students collaborated to build the environment from boxes, paint, recycled toys etc.

See more photos and information on the Student Voice page of this issue of "Inside Ivanhoe".

Education Week Update.

On May 19th at 11am we will join together for an intergalactic space adventure for National Simultaneous Storytime.  "Give me some space!" written and illustrated by Philip Bunting will be read by an astronaut on board the International Space Station simultaneously across Australia and New Zealand.

The theme ‘Building Connections’ focuses on how the community can act as a support network, support students’ learning and development and enhance social inclusion.

Education Week is an opportunity for all primary and secondary schools, higher education, and early childhood services to showcase how they are building connections with the community around them.

Ivanhoe Primary School will be celebrating Education Week in  a variety of ways and we will be opening our doors to the community on Wednesday the 26th from 9.30am to 11.30am concluding the morning with a short musical concert at 11am in the hall. Stay tuned for more information closer to the date.

The Principal will speak to prospective families  prior to the performance.

Cross Country.

IPS is fielding a considerable number of competitors this year. Thank you to Ms O'Connor and Mr McKay for running the training sessions and encouraging our athletes to do their best. The full list of competitors is on the Physical Education page of this issue of "Inside Ivanhoe".

Our beautiful school.

These drawings were done by Mary Zhou, grandma of Zachary from 1M.

Finally

On Monday mornings we begin the week with a whole school assembly.  Recently the Acknowledgement of Country has been delivered by our Year 5 students in Ms Millar's class. The students speak a phrase and the student body repeats. Over time, all IPS students will come to know the acknowledgement and understand its meaning.

The following students will be opening our assembly over the remainder of Term 2.

10th May Arjun & Chloe

17th May Avah & Sophie

24th May Phoebe and Amelia

31st May Chloe & Connor

7th June Arjun & Sophie

14th June Avah & Amelia

Although we still cannot sing the National Anthem at Monday Assemblies we have been ably led in AUSLAN by Hana H, Anna A, Harriet R, Stephanie M, Jessie B, Avah M and Tara V.

We are still constrained to only having parents and friends at Assembly of those students who are performing, presenting or receiving an award (star / student of the week).

Banyule is undertaking school zone safety improvement works in Waterdale rd. Apparently works will begin in mid - May. Looking forward to seeing some improvements that keep the school community safe.

Reminder

There is a FAIR MEETING for class reps and interested parents next Wednesday night at 7pm in the Collaboration Space (enter though the Lowe street pedestrian gate). This meeting is to dicuss class stalls, volunteering and organisation. More information on the Community News Page.
