Meet the 2020 subschools

Subschools and the Connect program
Student engagement and positive relationships are an essential pre-condition to learning. The NHS Subschool structure and Connect program are designed to enhance student belonging, wellbeing and positive connections to the school. Our Heads of School (subschool leaders) oversee the social, emotional and academic progress of their students, supported by Year Level Program Leaders, Tutors and classroom teachers. In the coming weeks you should be hearing from your child's Tutor. They, and the smiling faces below, are your key contacts for 2020.
A rule of thumb: if you have a question, or something doesn't feel right, please get in touch!

Year 8
We are looking forward to another exciting year with this cohort. In Year 8, our focus is on ‘Challenge’. We want our students to get outside their comfort zones and push themselves to achieve more than they did in Year 7. We are very excited to introduce a brand new camp for Year 8s this year. This journey based camp in Term 2 will focus on student initiative, resilience and team building. The course selection process later this year, will help students to reflect on their strengths and interests and give them the opportunity to design a program which suits their personal learning style. We are excited to work with the Year 8 tutors and student leaders to create a unique and rewarding year level experience in 2020.

Greetings from the Middle School! My name is Zac Healey and I am the Head of the Year 9 & 10 Sub -school. The other members of this fantastic team are Luke Barrett and Joanne Foley who are the Program Leaders for Year 10, and Josh Melican and Louise Tait who are the Program Leaders for Year 9. The middle years focuses on the opportunities and challenges of living within diverse communities. A key aspect of the Year 9 & 10 experience is the Northcote Model, which allows students greater choice and agency over the direction of their learning. Our team aims to provide students with opportunities that push them beyond their current abilities and to explore new possibilities.
Students explore and challenge themselves in programs such as City School (Year 9) and Work Experience (Year 10) by providing opportunities for students, celebrating excellence and effort and developing student leadership.
The Unique Year Level experience for Year 9 is titled “Community” and there will be a number of great experiences for all students to increase their connections to both the school and wider community. A key aspect of the program is developing student awareness of the variety of cultures living in the broader Melbourne community, with a number of Intercultural Day excursions being held throughout the year.
Year 10 is about “Exploring”. Over the course of the year students will explore their academic opportunities both within and beyond high school, they will explore possible career paths and more importantly job market trends and what that means for their future. The key events to look out for this year are Careers day (Term 1), Work Experience (Term 2), The Northern Territory Camp and the Social Entrepreneurship program happening in Term 3.

The Senior Years are an exciting time for students and we are looking forward to being part of their journey. In their final years of secondary school, they explore pathways and passions, as students develop as mature learners ready to take their next steps in to the world. Our senior students are engaged in a wide range of studies in VCE, and VCAL (Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning) and also VET subjects (Vocational Education and Training)
This year we are excited to be working with a revamped Connect curriculum for 2020. We spent significant time getting feedback and input from students which has helped shape this year’s program.
We value high aspirations and high support for all students. We know that when students set themselves challenging goals, pursue their interest and strengths with vigour and consistency, great outcomes occur. We are passionate about working in partnership with students, teachers and families to allow students to strive and achieve their personal best Leadership and personal growth are also features of the Senior School Connect program.
