NAPLAN

Over the past week our Year 3 and Year 5 students have had a practice in using the online NAPLAN portal - this was a nationwide exercise to see how the system held up and to also give children experience in using the online space.

NAPLAN this year will be held from the 11th -13th May with provision until the 20th May for absences or technical issues.

As always if you have a student in Year 3 or Year 5 and have concerns about their participation please contact your child's teacher or our NAPLAN coordinator Mr. Darren Perry.  dperry@fatimarosebud.catholic.edu.au

Spelling Bee

Last week we had 40 Year 3 to 6 students who participated in the Prime Minister's 2021 Spelling Bee.  The competition was held online and we are thrilled to announce that Lincoln R (4C) has made it to the state finals finishing in the top 100 students across Victoria. What a fantastic effort.

Early next term we will hand out our certificates including year level and school champion at an assembly.

A big thank you to all who had a go at this new competition - well done!

Literacy News

Our Prep, Year One and Year Two teachers have been doing some great work creating “Sound Walls” in their classrooms. They have been exploring a different phoneme (sound) each week and learning about all the different spelling choices (letter combinations) that are used to make that sound. Here you can see that Year 1Mc were reading “Giraffes Can Dance” so they came up with many different words that include the letter ‘g’ making the sound ‘j’ like in giraffe, ginger and danger.

Here, Year 1Mc, have learnt about all the different ways to spell the /ow/ sound, including /ow/ as in ‘snow’ and /oa/ as in ‘boat’.

Grade 2F have been learning about ‘word families’. They have been adding suffixes and prefixes to a base. In the pictures you can see that they explored all the compound words that could be made with the base ‘sleep’ and they stretched the words into individual sounds.

The Prep Classes read ‘Pig the Pug’ recently and did lots of interesting tasks to learn about different words that have the -ig ending (words that rhyme with pig). It’s very impressive stuff!

Well done to all the junior classes for their hard work this term exploring the sounds in words in great detail. The learning has been so engaging.

Have a great holiday,

Mary Lenko, Literacy Leader
