Year 3

Reading

In term 1 the grade 3 teachers and students have been working hard with making sure that we are all upholding the expectations of being inquisitive and organised readers. The grade 3 students have been focusing on familiarising themselves with how to further expand their understanding on various text types, building their stamina and love of reading. Students have been focusing on text structures and features of both fiction and non-fiction texts. They have done lots of work on exploring characteristics of both genres including narratives such as realistic fiction and informative texts such as information reports.  The grade 3’s have also been looking at features such as descriptions, chronological sequence, and comparison and contrast. Students have been focusing on vocabulary and other comprehension strategies such as summarising and visualising. The grade 3’s have enjoyed growing their reading strategies and look forward to expanding their knowledge in term 2.

Writing

In writing this term students have been working hard with building their writing strategies to improve their ability successfully grow their writing ideas. They have been showing a lot of care for their writers notebook as they have planted their writing seeds regularly to prepare them for future writing experiences. The grade 3 students have also been looking at the structure and features of a persuasive text, writing their own persuasive piece.  They explored various writing devices and went through the writing process, including building their vocabulary and improving their editing skills.

Maths

In maths this term the grade 3 students have been trying their best to be problem solving mathematicians.  The students predominantly worked hard on building their Place Value knowledge. They have been reading, building and making numbers in different ways. They have also been focusing on time, data and length. Students will continue to build their number and measurement knowledge in term 2

Inquiry

This term, the Grade 3s have been learning about safety in the home, the classroom and other environments. The students successfully identified hazards and unsafe behaviours in environments such as the classroom, kitchen, bathroom, park and beach.  They brainstormed ideas for how adults can remove hazards and came up with strategies for preventing accidents.  Students were successful at identifying safety features and safety signs in different contexts.  Well done on a great term of Inquiry, Grade 3!

The Grade 3 teachers are so proud of our wonderful learners and the hard work they have done this term! We look forward to seeing our learners ready for learning in term 2! Enjoy your break everyone!

ART

Grade 3/4 students have started the term personalising their art journals using a ‘collage’ technique; which is simply tearing pictures, words and ideas from magazines to create an ‘All about me’ personalised art folio cover. They have also designed the front page of their art journals that they use for sketching and creating ideas.

The main focus of term 1 has been about colour theory. We have been learning about the primary and secondary colours and are currently working on complementary or ‘opposite colours’. The students have adopted various techniques and have used mixed mediums to include in their artworks. They have also been introduced to the colour wheel and have experimented with colour order and colour opposites, and have been introduced to the colour blends; which occur in between the primary and secondary colours on the wheel, such as orangy-red. The students have also been identifying the different primary colour groups that create secondary colour groups; secondary colours are formed when we mix two primary colours together. The 3/4 students have been creating wonderful and bright mixed medium designs using a range of techniques and have incorporated their colour theory knowledge. They will finish the term experimenting with warm and cool colours and they will learn how artists, such as Keith Haring and Andy Warhol, effectively used these colours to enhance their artworks. It has been great fun working with paint and colour with the students in the art room this term.

PE

Thank you to all grade 3&4 students for an exciting and efficient start to Physical Education this year. In term 1 we were able to learn about a number of different games and use the associated skills efficiently in these games. Students were able to play several throwing games for distance and accuracy both underarm and overarm, play a modified version of doubles tennis and also concentrate on perfecting our one handed and two handed strike using several types of equipment with a major focus on holding the equipment the right way, setting up our feet correctly and getting the most out of every

swing. Great work grade 3&4 students, cant wait to continue to grow with you all in term 2.

SCIENCE

Thanks to all the grade 3 students for a consistent effort over term 1. This term, the grade 3’s have been examining the criteria scientists use to determine if something is living, non-living and was once living. The students have also been identifying common observable features of animals to assist in classifying them. Examples include legless, feathered, or have scales. The students have also played the role of an animal detective by searching through the leaf litter at school for the creatures that live there. Not only that, but students have also examined the role of the taxonomists in helping to classify new animals that are found around the world. As our Easter break is fast approaching, enjoy the break and see everyone in term 2.
