From the Assistant Principals

Uniforms

Students are to be in full school uniform before they arrive at school.  This will ensure that our college is represented with distinction whilst students are travelling to and from school.

As we head into winter, please be reminded that jumpers must be the Glen Eira College design only. Hoodies or jumpers of any other style will be confiscated by staff.  If students require an additional layer for warmth, a plain white t-shirt is permissible.  Any plain white t-shirt (i.e. no logos or designs) must be worn as an undershirt only and must not show below the sleeve or below the hemline.

Similarly, tights that are opaque black in colour (60 – 80 denier) may be worn but only with the skirt.  Please be reminded that all dresses and skirts should be of an appropriate length - not shorter than 5cm above the knee. The college skirt may be worn with either tights or black socks but not both.

A Glen Eira College hat or cap is the only permitted headwear.  Beanies are not part of the GEC uniform.  A scarf is optional in red, grey or black.

Nails must be of a reasonable length to participate in the curriculum safely.  Students who choose to have fake nails can only do so if they are short and of neutral colour. Long nails are a safety issue and will be addressed by year level coordinators. Makeup and coloured nail polish are not part of the uniform and must not be worn. Natural coloured foundation with SPF is the only permissible makeup.

Socks must be plain black with no logos and must cover the ankles.

Students should not wear jewellery to school other than a watch and a max of 2 pairs of studs or sleepers in the ears only.

Sport

All students should have completed an expression of interest for Term 2 sport in Week 1 of this term.  Any student who has missed out should contact me in my office.

Competition dates can be found below.

Training has started for many sports so students should check the bulletin carefully for details.

Judo Medals

Genevieve Salinas and Leo Schall both won medals at the recent Judo Victoria Autumn Competition held on 2nd May.  Genevieve won the Gold medal in the Senior Girls age group whilst Leo won the Silver medal in the Cadet Men age group.  These are great achievements.

School Leaders Network

Glen Eira College’s Captains and Vice Captains were invited to Brighton Secondary College on Wednesday 5th May to meet with the school leaders of other local schools.

This proved to be a great opportunity to establish connections with student leaders within the local network. Aimee, Joseph and Alex each shared their knowledge of student leadership, voice and agency.

The leaders from GEC, Brighton Secondary College, McKinnon Secondary College and Bentleigh Secondary College have committed to meeting again to further develop their leadership skills.  In the meantime they have started sharing resources online.

Bicycle travel

It is great to see so many students travelling to school by bike.  Students are asked to keep themselves and others safe by ensuring that they:

  • Always wear a helmet when riding a bike or scooter.
  • Use the bike racks provided.  If the racks in the quadrangle are full, students need to use the racks adjacent to the gymnasium.  Locking bikes to fences or gates is a hazard.
  • Walk their bikes when inside the school grounds.

Glen Eira Youth Advisory Committee

Glen Eira City Council Youth Services is currently recruiting for their inaugural Youth Advisory Committee.

The Youth Advisory Committee (YAC) will be one of Council’s formal advisory committees. Members will provide their feedback and advice in relation to Council plans and policies, ensuring that a youth perspective is considered on issues that affect the lives and wellbeing of local young people.

The Youth Advisory Committee will meet Five (5) times annually, in an accessible venue or online, if required. Committee members will be expected to attend 90% of the meetings.

We think that it’s important to hear the voices of diverse young people in Glen Eira and encourage culturally and linguistically diverse young people, LGBTIQA+ young people, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people and young people with disabilities to apply.

Selection is based on forming a committee that is representative of our diverse community as well as members having an illustrated passion and understanding of youth issues, and the desire to participate in open minded conversation on a wide range of topics.

Nominations are now open for young people aged 12-25 years old, who live, work or study in Glen Eira, and can be made online via their website:
