Peer Support Training

A key part of looking after wellbeing in the Junior School is Social and Emotional Learning - this is where we focus on explicitly teaching skills that support prosocial skills. Peer Support is an integral part of this program where our Year 6 students are given intensive training in leadership and mentoring. Becoming a Peer Support Leader in Year 6 is a key milestone for our Junior School students.

Our Year 6 students spent two sessions at Windermere Farm participating in activities designed specifically to support them as leaders. We focused on teamwork, communication, conflict resolution, the importance of relationships and being a mentor.

Starting in Week 3, all Junior School students will be taking part in the Program. A team of Year 6 leaders are allocated to a House group of students from all grades from Kinder to Year 5. They will guide them through a series of planned activities with a focus on developing friendship, assertiveness and anti-bullying behaviours. We hope that through completing these activities, students will be better equipped to deal with social challenges that are part of growing up, as well as feel part of a support network through their Peer Support Group. We look forward to supporting and encouraging our Year 6 students as they work to plan, prepare and present the lessons each week.

HICES Debating

In Week 1 our Junior School debaters headed to Scots All Saints to take part in their first debate in the HICES competition. Our topic was – Smart phones should be banned in schools for all age groups. In preparation, we had some great discussion and whilst the team could see the benefits of both sides, they convincingly argued the Affirmative case and walked away with their first win. The key issues the team raised were – the prevalence of cyberbullying, addictions and distractions as well as the potential for exposure to inappropriate content.

One of the strengths of this team was their ability to think about the opposition’s possible arguments and were well prepared for their rebuttals. The team are to be commended for their dedication in the lead up to the debate – the discussions had in preparation time really helps strengthen the students as critical thinkers. As a team of very new debaters, they are showing great potential in the way they engage with their topic and think on their feet.

The team was made up of: 1st speaker - Tom Mason, 2nd speaker – Matilda Curtin, 3rd speaker – April Englund, 4th speaker – Thomas Nelson, and fellow team members for support – Georgie Simpson and Matthew Lowther.

Junior School Mothers’ Day Stall

On Wednesday 5 May, the Junior School will be running our Mothers’ Day Stall, kindly assisted by the SRC. All gifts will be $5, with students allowed to initially purchase one gift each. If there are gifts left over, we will run a ‘Second Chance Stall’ the following day.

To help us with the safe handling of cash, it would be appreciated if parents could send the correct money in a labelled envelope or ziplock bag.

Students will attend the stall in class groups, with teachers keeping a list of gifts chosen by the students to ensure that siblings purchase something different to each other.

Every year the students love having the opportunity to go shopping by themselves and we look forward to helping them celebrate their families.

Thank you in anticipation of your support.
