Surf team at Jan Juc

Surf's up!

For the first time in a number of years, Northcote High School entered a team in the State School Surfing Championships, which was held at Jan Juc last week. Following a competitive selection process, a mixed team of seven students from years 7 to11 were selected. The week started with a training session at UrbnSurf, where every team member justified their selection with a very solid display of poise and skill in a right-hand cruiser session. The team then travelled down to Jan Juc very early on Friday morning to compete in the state championships. The competition was very tough, with Northcote being the only metro school entry. However, the team did not let this phase them and put in a very hard-fought effort to come third in their heat. Unfortunately, this did not qualify us for the final, which was eventually taken out by Surf Coast High School. We look forward to going bigger and better next year!

Senior Netball

Congratulations to our Senior Netball team who recently competed in the Divisional Competition. Despite being a pupil free day the team we still keen to represent our school. In doing so they smashed their opposition teams to finish on top to win the competition. At the end of the day our team had notched up 176 goals across all games, whereas their opposition teams combined, could only manage 14 goals. Their win now qualifies them to move through to compete in Regionals which is to be played on July 26.

Senior Basketball

On April 24 our Senior Basketball teams competed in the Division Competition at Coburg Basketball Stadium.   All teams played some competitive matches throughout the day with Northcote winning both the boys and girls competitions. They now advance through to the Regionals which is on 24 August.  Thank you to Ms Lester, Mr Flight and Anthony Stafford (NHS Parent) for coaching our teams.

Year 7 & 8 Regional Baseball

On Tuesday the 27th of April 2021 on Regionals we went to Mill Park to play baseball.  We won two games, we lost one and drew the other. Some highlights were Bailey’s pitching and Leo’s catching.

Year 7 Regional Tennis

Our year 7 tennis teams recently competed in the Regionals at Booroondara Tennis Club. Our girls team did their best to be competitive despite having an injured player who was unable to complete all her games. They girls all played well and should be proud of their efforts.

Our boys team was solid throughout the day, displaying great teamwork.  They finished on top of their pool after defeating Viewbank and Mill Park. This qualified them to play in the final against St Helena, where the boys continued there in winning form to become Regional Winners.  Well done boys, they will now play in the State Finals in November.

Interschool Equestrian Championships

On the weekend of 24 and 25 April, Annabelle Grage-Perry of Year 8, represented Northcote High School in, what we believe, may be our school’s first Interschool Equestrian event.

Horse trials covers three phases of horse riding: Dressage, show jumping and cross country jumping.  Annabelle and her beautiful horse, Krispy Kreme, attended Wandin Park with approximately 250 other riders. It was a great opportunity to meet some riders from other schools and represent the school in a new event.

If any other NHS students have horses and might be interested in future Interschools events please contact Annabelle – it would be great to be able to field a team in future.

Senior Boys AFL

It had been two years since this group of boys had been able to represent the school in football. On that day, we had a rare loss to Thornbury, who got the jump on us early. The now Senior Boys were keen to square the ledger and were first to the ball from the outset, with no weak links and everybody playing their role, Northcote led all day. It was an excellent mix of leadership from the year 12s and eagerness from the year 11s. Our next round is on June 22nd, where we will need to kick straighter than 13.18.
