Positive Learning

PBL: ‘Positive Behaviour for Learning' – What is it?
Lake Illawarra High School is continuing to implement PBL ‘Positive Behaviour for Learning'. PBL is an internationally recognised initiative that has been adopted by the NSW Department of Education to assist schools to develop and implement a broad range of systemic and individualised strategies for achieving important social and learning outcomes while preventing problem behaviours. PBL is adapted to each local school and community and allows each individual school to design a PBL framework to meet their unique needs.
PBL maximises a schools' ability to create a positive and safe school environment.
Our PBL Mission Statement:
Our Lake Illawarra High School community aims to provide a safe, caring community where all students reach their highest potential through positive and enriching learning experiences. All staff support life – long learning and a consistent approach that promotes a positive future for every student. We provide opportunities for our students to become responsible citizens who care and respect themselves and the community, and who can adapt to the diversity and challenges of a changing world.
Our School Values
Respect Responsibility Safety
- The implementation of PBL involves the explicit teaching of critical social skills. The process is designed to be preventative and proactive. Positive behaviour is rewarded and success is celebrated.
- Lake Illawarra High School has already seen great success in applying the PBL values to its whole school assemblies.
PBL Lessons
- PBL lessons are designed and delivered to teach students how to meet behavioural expectations. The PBL lessons are held throughout each semester. Students participate in discussions and activities relating to the values and how to apply them in different areas of the school.

- Students who display an understanding of the values are rewarded with Vivo points.
This year’s class expectations were formulated through consultation with both staff and students. These expectations will be displayed in all classrooms.
Vivo Miles are the new way to reward students as they progress through school life. Teachers award electronic points called Vivos - the new student currency- which students can then spend on an exciting range of products online at vivomiles.com.au
Students can earn Vivos for all kinds of things, including:
- Demonstrating respect, responsibility and safety to all
- Improved attitude and behaviour
- Helping and assisting a member of staff
- Participating in extra-curricular or lunchtime activities
The Vivo shop has many varied items on offer, including:
- Event Cinema gift voucher
- School and stationery products
- EB game card
- Donations to various charities
- iPad
- Food treats etc.
Students can check how many Vivo points they have earned by logging on to their account through the vivomiles website.
ATTENDANCE MATTERS 2019:
On Time, Every Day
Tremendous Start with Attendance
The strong links between high level student attendance, improved learning and high level academic success have been well researched and documented. It is great to see the majority of our students currently having 100% attendance at school. It is essential that students are at school for the start of the school day, so that they do not miss the start of period 1. Students should arrive at school by 8:20am in the morning, so that they are ready to move off to roll call at 8:28am when the warning bell rings to start the school day.
Students will be rewarded for excellent attendance within the PBL Vivo system.
FOCUS VALUE : RESPONSIBILITY
Focus for the fortnight is:
We are responsible when we are in the right place at the right time and doing the right thing.
Student will be on time for class
Students will be ready to learn.
Remember the homework centre is available to all students from 7‐12 to assist them with completing tasks. The homework centre runs every Monday afternoon from 3‐4pm.
PBL 100% Attendance Draws.
Each fortnight one student's name is randomly drawn out from all who have had 100% attendance to class and school. $10 vouchers are provided from our local businesses. Thank you to Cafe Els Warilla, Pinocchio Pizzas, Domino's Shellharbour, LIHS Canteen and McDonalds Warilla.
Special Provisions for HSC Examinations 2019
Disability Provisions for the 2019 HSC examinations are now open.
Disability Support provisions are practical support for students with a disability. Students’ special examination needs may include learning (literacy difficulties), medical (including diabetes, epilepsy, chronic pain), vision or hearing difficulties.
Examples of provisions available include: braille or large-print papers, use of a writer and/or reader, use of an oral interpreter, extension of test time, rest breaks, separate examination supervision and permission to take medication.
If your child is considering applying for Disability Support (formerly known as Special Provisions), here is some important information from BOSTES regarding changes to Disability Support:
· Evidence should be no older than term 4 of the year prior to the HSC.
· Students experiencing an anxiety disorder should seek appropriate treatment or therapy prior to applying for provisions to ensure they have adequate strategies to cope in an examination situation. A course of evidence-based treatment often removes the need for disability provisions. Applications are likely to be declined unless the student has first undertaken treatment or therapy. If treatment has not adequately addressed the issues, only then should provisions be sought to assist the student in an examination situation.
Examiner aware - speaking or performance: for a student in a speaking or performance examination who may
require accommodation where, for example, the student:
- has a stutter or is unable to maintain eye contact
- lip reads and needs to face the examiner
- is on the autism spectrum and may miss drama cues
- requires enlarged stimulus material where appropriate
NESA prefers that applications for existing conditions are submitted to them by the end of Term 1, 2019. It is possible to lodge a late application.
