Principal's Message

A warm welcome to all of our wonderful Lake Illawarra High community to 2019!

An especially warm welcome to our Year 7 students and their families to what I am sure will be an exciting six years of learning, growing and developing all of those skills that will allow you to excel at whatever it is that you choose to do. I am very happy to report that our year 7 students have settled into high school life extremely well and have already begun taking advantage of all the different experiences that Lake Illawarra High School has to offer.

This year, we will again be working closely with the University of Wollongong (UOW) to further support our students in their engagement with STEM, as well as other areas of interest. Our partnership with UOW allows us to access a huge array of resources which engages our students in their learning.

We have also created designated Enrichment classes across the school which will allow us to further challenge and engage our students across the curriculum using a number of different resources. To this end we have applied to the Department of Education for joint funding to create a Flexible Learning Centre here at school. I will keep you posted on the progress of this exciting project.

Student wellbeing is also a very important focus for Lake Illawarra High School. We have a zero tolerance to bullying and have a well being team to support this goal.

To further support our students wellbeing, we are continuing with the development of our Wellbeing Hub and through this our unique ANCHOR Project. This year we have two counselors working at the school, as well as two Youth Workers. Our ANCHOR project is designed to not only support individual students, but families as well, especially with helping to link up and connect with other agencies in the community.

We also welcome the CLONTARF organisation into Lake Illawarra High School. This wonderful initiative is designed to increase the engagement of our Aboriginal male students and also to support the school in improving positive outcomes for all of our students. Welcome to our first of two CLONTARF workers, Glen Stephen, to our school.

There are many more initiatives that we will be implementing throughout the year to support our students to excel in whatever they do. Please keep abreast of what is happening at Lake Illawarra High through our Facebook page.

Also please feel free to contact myself or any other staff member from Lake High at any time to discuss your youngsters progress. It is so important that we all work together!

Kind regards

Deputies' Desk

Welcome to 2019

Welcome back to all our students and families, and welcome to all who are joining our school community. It was great to see our Year 7 group on their first day all excited and ready to start their high school journey, on those first few days, I know the kids were a little anxious but it has been so good to see them all settle in and become a part of our school. Al of us here at Lake are look forward to working with all our students, their families and community members this year, as we work for both individual and collective success. This year I will be responsible for Years 7, 9, and 11, whilst Mr Meizer will be looking after years 8, 10 and 12.

As always, term 1 is a busy term, as our students are settling into their new classes, getting to know their new teachers and organising their classwork and assessment tasks. It is vital that each of our students starts the school year with a fresh attitude and is well prepared for the year ahead and in saying this, if you or your child is unsure of what is expected of them, please make contact with their class teacher.

We have our Year 7 Parent BBQ Thursday week 3 starting at 2pm. Each of the year 7 students have been given an information letter about this event. The Year 7 BBQ is a great opportunity for the teachers of the school, particularly the year 7 teachers to meet our new parent group. Please, if you can spare the time, come down to the school to meet your child’s teacher and have a free sausage sandwich. I look forward to seeing you and meeting you next week.

Last week, our school held its Annual School Swimming carnival. This was a very well organised and run carnival, which saw an increase in student attendance. The day comprised of both novelty events and traditional swimming events but this year saw the introduction of the ‘Dunk Tank’, where for 50 cents a throw, students had the chance to dunk their teacher. I would like to thank the PDHPE staff and the Lake staff who helped prepare or organise aspects for the day, in particular Mrs Hartas, our Carnival Organiser for her efforts in putting together a great day for our school. I would like to also wish those students who have made it through to Zone all the best for their upcoming carnival.

I big thankyou to Mr McAndrew, Mr Price and the SRC team for their efforts in organising the Valentine’s Day roses and chocolates. The team spent their recess and lunches over the last week taking orders and finally preparing the deliveries. I know that Mr Hicks was disappointed that he was left out this year, maybe next year. Well done team!

As always, if you have any questions, please feel free to call the school as we are always happy to help.
