Term Reflection

As many of you are aware, MPS has been involved in the DET School Review process, which commenced last year in Term 4. Every four years, schools head into a period of review which culminates in a new,  Strategic Plan. The eight person panel looked into all areas of school operations and compliance.  I would like to thank all staff members for the tireless work that has been put into this entire process- it has been a rewarding, yet exhausting Term!

I wish all of our families a wonderful, school holiday break. I hope that you are all able to recharge somewhat and enjoy some down time with your children.

Stay safe!

School Review  -  Kirsty Leahy - SC President

As President of the School Council, I have had the privilege of being on the School Review panel. The last month has been a whirlwind of positive energy, stories of learning and engagement from empowered students and teachers, accounts from parents of the positive growth they have seen in their children in the areas of learning, wellbeing and engagement, and observations of how all this happens in the classroom, art room, music room, Japanese room, kitchen, garden and sports fields. It has me truly grateful for what we have at Monty Primary School.

I’d like to recognise and congratulate the teachers for their hard work in preparation for Review and their openness in letting the panel wander in and out of their classes. Teachers also participated in group discussions with the panel and spoke with passion about their teaching and displayed their drive for continuous improvement.

We have some special leaders at this school who have led the school through a significant period of growth in terms of students numbers and more importantly learning outcomes.  Janene, in particular, has shown vision and built trust in her teaching staff, empowering them to be their best.

While this review is not about a “result” or end “judgement”, it is worth pointing out and celebrating the areas that the Review panel rated the school as "Excelling".  These were:

Building practice excellence

Evidence based high impact teaching strategies

Instructional and shared leadership

Vision, values and culture

Empowering students and building pride

Setting expectations and promoting inclusion

The real value in this Review has been the chance for the whole school community to reflect on how the school has developed over the last four years and to use this positive story as momentum for planning future directions and continual improvement to meet the needs of our children. I feel confident that a Monty PS education will prepare our children to be self-directed, self-aware, life-long learners with a foundational knowledge and understanding to make valued contributions as global citizens.

SC Meeting Update:

School Council held its second meeting for 2019 last Tuesday. New council members were welcomed, and everyone settled into their new roles. We heard from Janene about our hard working teachers and all the wonderful professional development they have been doing this term. School council received induction training to the child safe standards. We discussed future directions for our Buildings and Grounds sub-committee. As a result, there will be a call out to the community to register their trade skills, with the view of being able to call on these skills as projects arise during the year. So if you are willing to help out and have specific skills you can offer, look out for the Compass post to register.

Have a wonderful school holiday break!

Kirsty Leahy
