SURVIVOR ART CHALLENGE
The Survivor Art Challenge took place on Tuesday 22 May. The activities groups could choose from were creating: an immunity idol, a mask, an immunity necklace, a T-Shirt logo design and in media an opening sequence introducing new Survivor contestants.
Here is a glimpse of some of the very interesting Survivor Immunity Idols that were created by Year 8 students in T07 with Ms Kuriata and Mrs Griffith on the day.

YEAR 7 ART/ENGLISH EXCURSIONS TO THE NGV INTERNATIONAL
Towards the end of Term 2 four Year 7 classes attended an Art/English excursion to the NGV (National Gallery of Victoria) in St Kilda Road. 7F & 7J attended with Mrs Griffith, Miss Mellios and Mr Gurry and 7N & 7L with Mrs Griffith, Ms Day and Ms Apostolellis. Both groups met at school in the morning, caught the train from McKinnon to Flinders Street Station and walked to the gallery. The students were very excited about visiting the gallery and for many of them it was their first visit there. Quite a few students were very excited about catching the train and for one or two of them it was their first train trip.
The morning session at the gallery involved the students participating in a number of activities led by NGV educators. Students responded to artworks through a variety of activities such as acting as curators, creating a short dramatic response and writing poetry. All students saw and discussed Picasso’s Weeping Woman. Seeing this artwork in person was very relevant to their Art Theory Task.
After a break for lunch in the Sculpture Garden we spent the afternoon completing a practical activity. Everyone enjoyed this task and the opportunity to create an artwork themselves. After the final activity we walked back to Flinders Station and had a quiet train ride home. It was definitely a busy, fun-filled day for both groups in which all students and staff enjoyed themselves.

EXCURSION REFLECTION
7J and 7F went on an excursion to the NGV on Wednesday 23 May, 2018. I personally realised what beautiful artwork the NGV displays and I really enjoyed the trip. One of the activities both classes participated in was taking part in a practical activity. The practical activity was all about line and we had to stick coloured tissue paper on some normal paper and then stick acetate on it with permanent marker drawn on the acetate. This was my favourite activity because I really enjoyed drawing on the acetate and creating something that would turn out to be an okayish piece of artwork.
Moving on... One of the things that I thought could have been improved is that I felt that our group stayed a bit too long on some of the paintings and next time I would like to spend a little less time on a couple of them and see more. Don't get me wrong though, I really did find the paintings fascinating. One of the paintings we did see that we were focusing on was the’ Weeping Woman' by Pablo Picasso. Picasso's ‘Weeping Woman’ is a unique painting because of the use of shapes and colour. It was made because of the bombings in Guernica in 1902 and the meaning of the painting is because of a woman who is terribly upset because her baby had died in the civil war. There are a lot of paintings Picasso painted also named 'The Weeping Woman' so if you want to view this particular painting in person or over the internet, visit this link: https://www.ngv.vic.gov.au/explore/collection/work/4256/
Book your tickets now, believe me! To sum up my experience, I would say that my time at the NGV was awesome and I definitely will visit the NGV again.

FRENCH EXCHANGE STUDENTS ENJOYING ART
It was a pleasure to have the French Exchange students come to an Art theory class with Ms Roden and an Art practical class with Mrs Griffith during their visit to McKinnon. The students were very interested in Australian Art history and enjoyed the opportunity to learn about Aboriginal Art and create their own artwork.
