Library Corner

This term the Book Club participated in the International Association of School Librarianship (IASL) Bookmark Exchange Project. We were matched with three different schools in Hungary, Slovenia and Portugal and posted out our handmade creations. It was a fun experience and a simple way of sharing the pleasure and delights of reading, and of making new friends through school libraries worldwide. So far we have received bookmarks from the school in Hungary and we were very impressed with the high quality and diversity of artwork! We now wait eagerly for the bookmarks from the other schools.

The library recently announced the Book Review Prizes for semester two, and they were awarded to:

Top Reviewers – Georgia Wood-Freeman (8D) with 30 reviews, Aimee Harris (8A) with 19 reviews, Tracey Kry (8D) with 11 reviews and Elizabeth Lindner-Craig (11C) with 9 reviews.

Best Overall Review #1 – Jasmin Kalpins (7F) for Word Nerd

Best Overall Review #2 – Anika Dixit (10B) for Clockwork Princess

Best Overall Review #3 – Adelin Zipman (9E) for Sad Girls

Congratulations to these students and thank you to everyone who wrote excellent book reviews for our library catalogue this year.

We would like to say a very big thank you to our 2017 Library Monitors. This group of students from Year 7-12 have gone above and beyond when it comes to helping in the library this year, whether it be with simple things like keeping the space clean and tidy, to helping organise library events and mentoring younger students.

I am proud to be the recipient of the 2017 School Library Association of Victoria Research Fellowship, which I received on Friday 24th November at an awards ceremony during the SLAV annual conference. The fellowship includes a grant which I will use to travel to Singapore in 2018 to investigate the ways in which school libraries best serve their multilingual patrons. I will use this research to establish better collections and services for our EAL and LOTE students at Glen Eira College, including for the immersion programs.

The library is now closed for 2017 due to renovations taking place. We will re-open at the beginning of term 1 2018, and the work is expected to be finished by mid-term. We are very excited and are looking forward to a vibrant, refreshed library next year!

Finally, thank you for a wonderful year in the GEC Library and a very happy holidays to all. We hope you get stuck into some great books over the break!
