Second-hand Uniform Stall

Held at Glen Eira College on Monday 29th January 2017 9am-10.30am (this is the same day as textbooks can be collected at school).

Please consider donating any spare uniform items.  Smaller sizes are especially appreciated, as they are often sought by families of Year 7 students starting at Glen Eira College.  Please ensure that all items are in reasonable condition and have been washed and thoroughly dried before you bring them in. Please note that we cannot sell items that are no longer part of the college uniform, such as polar fleece jackets or the older-style sports tops (sports tops in the current style - with red sleeves - are very welcome).

Please consider volunteering to help make this stall a success by helping us run and to set up/ pack up the stall.

Every year, this stall helps many families and raises money for the college.  Any items or time that you donate will be valuable.

Sports uniforms and equipment that can't be reused at GEC can be donated to Boots For All Sports www.bootsforall.org.au/

Farewell from Juliet, the Outgoing Convenor

It has been a privilege to be co-convenor or convenor of GECPA for the last 4 years. When my children started at Glen Eira College, there was no parents association.  In 2012, two other GEC mothers (braver than I) started GECPA.  Ellen Frajman and Helen Midler were our first co-convenors, and they enthusiastically launched themselves into establishing GECPA.  They thought, as I did, that it would be a valuable addition to the school and the wider community.

I joined the committee at the first meeting, and eventually became co-convenor then sole convenor.  In 2015 I also had Marie-Pierre Deleplanque as co-convenor. Various other parents have served on the committee and made valuable contributions.  I am grateful to all of them.

I am extremely proud of the contribution GECPA has made to the school so far, and of all the parents who have donated their time and energy for the sake of the school and community. I am glad that I am leaving GECPA in good hands- a bunch of dedicated, creative, enthusiastic and friendly parents.

A look back at 2017:

  • In January, our second-hand uniform stall raised over $2,000 and helped many families.
  • In March, we enjoyed a Multicultural Picnic in the school grounds.  This free event helped many families to meet each other while enjoying great food and celebrating our diverse community.
  • Also in March, we held a fundraising stall at the council event Party in the Park, selling snow cones and other goodies to raise over $900.
  • In June, we held our very popular movie night at the Classic Cinema, where we enjoyed watching Wonder Woman.
  • In August, volunteers from our community supported the college production of Fame Junior with a delicious supper at interval.
  • Through the Woolworths Earn and Learn campaign, we helped the college buy new sports equipment, which should arrive in term 1 next year.
  • Monies raised helped Glen Eira College pay for:
    • musical instruments (approx. $5,000 worth)
    • outdoor seating in the area behind the Performing Arts Centre (contributed about $7,000 towards the cost)
    • a defibrillator (approx. $2,000).

Thank you to all our volunteers who have contributed over the course of 2017.

Weekly walk and talk

We have a social walking group which meets once a week to walk and chat for about an hour.  We meet on Tuesday evenings (weather permitting) at 7:30pm at the corner of Crosbie and Murrumbeena Roads at Duncan Mackinnon Reserve.

So that we can keep in contact, we have set up a messaging group on Whatsapp. To join the group, just email us your name and phone number.  (If you don't already have Whatsapp installed on your smartphone, you will need to do that first - it's very easy to install and to use).

School Crossing Campaign

Our campaign to make the street at Glen Eira College safer continues. In August, School Council contacted all Glen Eira College families with a fact sheet analysing traffic data from the Booran Road pedestrian crossing.  Families were asked to contact their local MP and the Minister for Roads and Safety urgently to ask for a safer school crossing.

We are pleased that local MP's have reported receiving a number of phone calls and emails from GEC families.  Glen Eira Councillors are also doing what they can to have this issue resolved.

David Southwick, MLA for Caulfield, presented our petition in the Victorian Legislative Assembly on 7th September, saying 'We call on the state government and VicRoads to urgently install variable electronic speed signage at this dangerous pedestrian crossing on Booran Road, Caulfield East.'  Ruth Gordon, President of School Council, also attended to show her support.

We now have almost 400 signatures on our online petition. If you haven't signed yet, please add your name at https://www.change.org/p/urgent-action-on-speed-signs-for-glen-eira-college-students and pass this link onto your family and friends (children can also sign the petition).
