Times Table Competition

During Term 4 Healesville High School held their inaugural Times Tables Competition to oppose some of the best mathematicians against each other in a race!

The challenge was to complete a times tables grid with 100 questions in the quickest time possible. However, this needed to be done accurately, otherwise 30 seconds was added to the time for any incorrect answer.

After the first round of competition, the following students were crowned champions for their respective year level:

Year 7 – Sienna Crossman

Year 8 – Caitlyn Kennedy

Year 9 – Joshua Britt

Year 10 – Nathan Pye

Year 11 – Jessica Forbes

The Grand Final was a knockout event using a different format where the year level champions were required to call out answers to questions being constantly ‘fired at them’.

After a tremendous battle, Jessica Forbes was

crowned the HHS Times Table Champion for 2018.

Inaugural Spelling Competition

During Week 2 of Term 4, students participated in the inaugural Healesville High School Spelling Competition. Throughout the week, a Year Level Spelling Champion was determined, with the winner being awarded a $20 canteen voucher. It was fantastic to see such a good turnout for this event with students actually enjoying competing in a Spelling Bee! Hopefully there will be even more participants next year!

The 2018 year level champions:

Year 7 – Ava Ware

Year 8 – Issy Smith

Year 9 – Macey Deefholts

Year 10 – Estelle Peterson

Year 11/12 – Jarrah Shub

The Grand Final was a show-down between Macey Deefholts and Estelle Peterson. After a tight tussle, the Healesville High School Spelling Champion for 2018 was Estelle!

Thank you to Maidi Mitchell and Chloe Jackson for their assistance with this event.

Due to the success of the student competition, staff decided to hold their own Spelling Bee, with the winner being  Mr Allan Rennick and Mr David Lloyd

Student of the Month

Year 7

Kiah Galletti

Kiah lives with her mum and her sister in Chum Creek. She has the cutest little Chihuahua called Bruno who is always trying to appear bigger than he is by standing on his back feet.

Kiah loves to play netball or go swimming and sometimes likes the quiet, calm of finding a place to sit and draw.

This weekend Kiah is trying out for a youth acting group because she would really love to have a career as an actress either on screen or in the theatre. It was her participation in this year’s school play of ‘Rock of Ages’ that awoke her passion for acting as being on the stage was such a fantastic experience.

At school Kiah enjoys her art classes the most as learning all the different techniques has really improved her drawing. Kiah has had lots of fun in her first year of high school and has made wonderful new friends.

Kiah is looking forward to going on the Year 7 and 8 camp on the 10th to 12th of December this year. She is excited about being at the beach and participating in all the activities with her friends.

Year 8

Rhiannon Kelly

Rhiannon lives with her parents, younger brother Hayden, Rosebud the Dalmatian and Corin, Brizzy and Nigel the cats.

Rhiannon likes painting, playing with Rosebud and working on her circus skills which include ‘the roller-bowler’ and tumbling. Rhiannon started working on her circus skills at the start of 2016. This is now an ongoing passion of hers and something she is working hard to improve.

Rhiannon’s favourite subjects are Art and Japanese. She is hoping to improve her Maths skills and spelling ability next year.

Rhiannon was part of the backstage crew for the play again this year and was extremely excited to be a part of the glue that holds the entire production together.

Rhiannon’s career goals are to work behind the scenes in major movie productions, either as the director, scene manager or travelling the world as a location scout. This is something she is extremely passionate about and has already investigated the various avenues that lead to this career. Being a part of the Doctor Who production would be the ultimate measure of success.

Year 9

Paris McMurray

Paris lives with her parents and four younger siblings in Yarra Glen. She also has two dogs; Lady and Brutus and the family cat, Max. She is currently experiencing some training issues with Brutus who is only one year old and not the most intelligent individual when it comes to obedience.

Paris loves her football, she plays for Yarra Glen and umpires for the Yarra Valley. This year Paris and her team made it to the preliminary finals but were unfortunately defeated by Vermont. Paris also has a great passion for horses, although finding her next partner in crime has proven to be a little more challenging than first thought. She hopes that 2019 is a fun filled

equestrian-challenge sort of year.

When she’s not off on a sporting adventure, Paris likes to take a quiet moment to read one of her fantasy novels. At times her friends are concerned by the level of excitement they see in her at the prospect of receiving a new book. This confuses Paris because who wouldn’t be excited by the opportunity to explore a new and magic-filled world.

At school Paris enjoys her sport classes most of all, closely followed by photography. Next year Paris is taking on the VCE subject of Health and Human Development because her long-term goal is to be a physiotherapist or a midwife. She is also really looking forward to the Year 10 Queensland camp.
