Music Count Us In - 2020 Songwriting Competition Winner
We were delighted that Year 8 student, Eve Cooper, was one of four songwriters from across Australia successful in the 2020 Music Count Us In Songwriting Competition.
Eve’s winning entry, Listen to the Music, was about the benefits of music for everyone. Given Eve’s love of music and her substantial involvement in the School’s co-curricular music program, Eve is well placed to write a song about the benefits of music.
As a winner of the competition, Eve had the opportunity to travel to Melbourne to work with professional musician Lior and three other young musicians to write the song for this year’s Music Count Us In Event.
Music Count Us In is held every year in November and sees schools from across Australia join in the singing of the song written for that year. This year’s event will be held on Thursday 5 November at 12.30pm. We very much look forward to hearing this year’s song, particularly knowing that Eve had a large hand in helping to write it.
Eve is the second Friends’ student to win this competition with Friends’ alumnus Kae Girao winning the same in 2014.

The Dave Wilson Band
Dave Wilson is a member of the Music Staff as a teacher at Clemes, and is the director of some of our ensembles and the School’s Resident Contemporary Musician. In his ‘spare time’ he also performs with the Dave Wilson Band, members of which recently performed during lunch in the High School. The performance was followed that afternoon by a contemporary music workshop in the Green Room of The Farrall Centre. For the workshop, Dave and his bass player, Bob Tolputt were joined by local drummer and tutor at Friends’, Konrad Park.
The workshop rocked! It was well attended by students who enjoyed an afternoon of great music and wise advice from three highly experienced musicians.
Year 8 Masks
These colourful masks created by some artistic Year 8 students have recently been mounted on their stands by Art Aide, James.
The Year 8 mask project aims to develop a student's ability to recognise how art by other artists and from different cultures can influence a design, about glazing techniques, clay textures, joining techniques and slab rolling and mould techniques.
The end result looks absolutely stunning!
Art Spaces at home!
With the transition to distance learning our art students have been setting up studio spaces at home and they are just as creative as you would expect. Check out some of these wonderful spaces:
