The role of the school captain

The school captain role is the key student leadership position at Brunswick Secondary College. School captains represent students within the school, and represent Brunswick Secondary College to the community. School captains lead the SRC to work democratically and collaboratively to represent the student body in school decision-making and to organise ways for students to participate in and enjoy school life. School captains are approachable students who help to create and nurture constructive ideas within the school community. They focus on working on improving the student experience at Brunswick and foster school spirit and leadership among students. 

 

The captains of the school are expected to work together and form a harmonious and effective leadership team. They collaboratively undertake specific and general duties as well as contribute in a positive way to the tone and morale of the school through their own conduct, participation and example.

 

The school captains recognise and accept that this leadership role requires dedication and genuine and ongoing commitment. Direct management and thoughtful balance with school and personal commitments is also required. School captains are required to show diligence in their studies and combine this with active participation in the SRC.

 

The successful applicants for this position must be able to demonstrate a record of support for the college and its programs and positive modelling for other students.

Key Roles and Responsibilities

The school captains are required to:

  • Recognise, value and support the philosophy, values and expectations of the college
  • Represent students within the school, and represent Brunswick Secondary College to the community
  • Lead the SRC to work democratically and collaboratively to represent the student body in school decision-making and to organise ways for students to participate in and enjoy school life
  • Provide leadership, encouragement and support to the representatives
  • Encourage students throughout the school to apply for and accept leadership roles and opportunities
  • Play an active role in the preparation and conduct of assemblies
  • Act as an ambassador for the school and representative of the study body through attendance at various college and public functions such as transition and information evenings
  • Attend and chair SRC meetings fortnightly at lunchtime
  • Prepare agendas, record and distribute minutes of SRC meetings and ensure that meetings are conducted in accordance with formal meeting procedures
  • Meet regularly with the Principal, and Assistant Principal to provide advice on matters of student wellbeing, programs, morale, conduct, student voice and initiatives
  • Attend and report at School Council meetings monthly
  • Collaborate with the Parent Association (PA) and Student Representative Council in organising and running major college events such as the Twilight Market
