Remote Learning 101

Students have been contributing recently to The Colac Herald's series on remote learning. Here's a couple of examples from Jewel and Georgia on how they are surviving in the home classroom:

The Covid-19 pandemic has forced students to learn remotely from home where possible. What does year 12 now look like for you?

Year 12 for me is still looking the same in regard to learning as much as I can and continuing to study for end of year exams.

It is disappointing that we are missing out on social activities with friends and also final year events we would usually look forward to attending as our last year of school with our Year 12 group.

With the pandemic forcing us to change our lifestyles as we knew it, are there any changes that have come as a welcome surprise or a disappointment to you?

I’ve found with everything that has changed now, my life is a lot less stressful and I’m enjoying completing my schoolwork at home at my own pace, which I’ve found has helped me remember more of what I’m learning.

The changes I have been surprised with is how life has almost come to a halt and I’m not planning what I’m doing next. It’s made me realise how important it is to do the things that I enjoy and make me happy although sometimes doing nothing and being able to relax is enjoyable and refreshing too.

Most importantly, I have realised how important it is to spend time with the people I love, who make me laugh and support me during the tough times and the good times.

Georgia Higgins, Year 12

The covid-19 pandemic has made year 12 look very different to how I thought it would be! Missing out on a lot of school events that everyone was looking forward to, the year 12 experience is definitely going to be different for all of us but we will get through it. What I miss the most is seeing everyone everyday both my friends and my teachers who I’m used to seeing 5 days a week now seeing them over video calls is not the same.

With the pandemic forcing us to change our lifestyles as we knew it, are there any changes that have come as a welcome surprise or a disappointment to you?

There has been changes from this pandemic that surprised me with this remote learning. I have completely changed my routine from sleeping in until mum would tell me I need to get up and get ready for school to now getting up a lot earlier than I usually would.

I'm starting studying, doing all the work I need to get done for the day in the morning so I have the afternoon to do something else like exercising!

I found that I lose all motivation to do anything in the afternoon so this has really worked well for me so far during this remote learning time!
