From the Science Lab

Sherryl Crouch - Science Specialist

The beginning of this term has been busy with Year 6 and Year 5 students presenting their work from last term on volcanoes and our solar system. There have been many very impressive presentations that were the culmination of last term’s excellent teamwork.

This term we are beginning a unit of study in chemical sciences. Year 2's are examining the properties of materials and how materials can be changed.

Year 3 students started by trying to identify materials that had been changed by heat. Some were easy and others were not recognisable. They also observed changes that

happened when a lit candle on a plate of water is covered by an upturned jar.

Year 4 began the term by setting up an investigation to observe the decomposition of different materials. The investigation will be run over the term. Students have been demonstrating their understanding of selecting materials with suitable properties for making packaging to send cookies through the post. Their aim is for their cookies to arrive safely back at school unbroken. The second part of their challenge was to select materials that were light. Due to the cost of postage, only two parcels from each class will actually be sent through the post.
