Everybody needs friends and with World Friendship Day being on Tuesday 30 July 2020, here are some ideas to help make friends and keep friends.
What does friendship look like?
- Spending time together.
- Having fun!
- Respecting each other, sharing ideas and things such as books, treats etc.
- Looking out for each others safety and wellbeing.
- Working on the skills to keep our friendship going.
How can you be a friend?
- Share the conversation - this allows everyone to have a chance to talk, be a good listener and ask questions.
- Use your manners - friends like to be pleasant with each other, so say please and thank you and praise your friends when they do something well such as when they try something new or when they do their best at sport.
- Be helpful - do things for friends that are useful, kind and caring.
- When sharing or borrowing stuff off your friends, remember to give it back.
- Be aware of your friend's feelings and be honest about your feelings.
- Share your time with other friends.
What makes a good friend?
- Having fun together!
- You and your friend working together to keep the friendship.
- Respecting and trusting each other. Looking out for one another.
- Having equal shares - not one always being the leader and the other following.
- Being able to feel comfortable and safe to talk about problems and feelings.
- Even best friends need time alone, so allowing friends to have time alone or having time with other friends and they still will be friends.
And remember, you can be your own best friend!
