Supporting your child with the return to home learning

With the return to home learning I thought it would be a good time to remind you of some simple ways that you can support your child while learning at home:

  • Encouraging your child to ask questions during the online learning sessions. In the classroom, we encourage students to ask questions when they are unsure of the task so encouraging your child to ask questions during the lesson can help them understand the task better.
  • Ask your child to read over a problem out loud. You may like to ask your child some of the following questions: What is the problem asking you to do? What are the key words that can help you work it out? (e.g. the word “difference” is asking you to subtract)
  • Ask your child to show you how they worked it out. In the classroom we often encourage discussion and reflection throughout and especially at the end of a lesson to share our problem solving strategies.
  • Praise your child’s effort. Learning maths isn’t just about the answer, it’s also about having a growth mindset and persisting with our learning.

Please contact your child’s teacher if you have any questions or would like to know what

she would suggest doing at home to assist with your child’s learning in mathematics.
