Big Science Competition

Back in May, twenty-five students participated in the Big Science Competition. This is the first time students have been able to compete from home! Congratulations to all students. The results show some excellent science literacy and problem solving skills. Two students achieved a High Distinction (top 5% in Australia) and two students achieved Distinctions (top 15% in Australia).

I hope to see this competition grow and for more students to challenge themselves in 2021.

Manipulating the DNA molecule: Unit 4 Biology virtual excursion

Year 12 Biology held our first ever virtual excursion. Students listened to Science educators explain common molecular techniques and their applications, specifically how we can safely make copies of proteins to be used in vaccines. Students participated in polls and answered multiple choice questions to show their understanding. Prior to the excursion students made a paper model of a recombinant plasmid (bacterial DNA with genes from jellyfish and viruses inserted) and then used the model to help interpret the results of a gel.
