From the Classroom

Foundation

This week in Reading, our focus has been learning to become an independent reader. This involves selecting a book from a book box and browsing/viewing the text/identifying sight words/looking at pictures for detail, as well as categorising the book into either a non-fiction or fiction book. Our anchor chart to display our ideas on this topic says;

It looks like …

  • Sitting still in your spot.
  • Eyes are in your book.
  • Brain is thinking about the words and pictures.
  • Cool, calm, relaxed and quiet classroom.

The Foundation have really enjoyed this part of our morning.

We have continued our learning on Money with the added focus of counting by 2s. It is important that the children are familiar with counting by 2s, 5s and 10s to 100 when entering Grade One. If it is not a great night for reading homework, try some counting aloud and recording some of these on a whiteboard or paper. Send it to school for important positive recognition. Photos in an email is a great way of sharing too.

We have also been enjoying “Learn to Draw” videos with Rob. We did a helicopter earlier in the week, and on Wednesday we drew sloths.

Foundations love their Show and Tell day! It is not expected that they have to bring something and sometimes they might just want to “Tell”. They loved Scarlett’s harmonica and Fenton’s remote control front end loader.

Photos show another happy week at school 😊

Grade 3

Another busy term has begun with Grade 3, despite the flood impact on the greater Shepparton region, it was fantastic to see most children being able to access school last week.

Here is an outline of the classroom learning activities for this week.

Reading: The class goal has been for children to increase their reading stamina for up to 15 – 20 minutes. In term 4, all students will continue with individual reading goals and demonstrate evidence of their goal, through a reading conference.

Spelling: All children have been developing their skills and understanding of words making the long o sound. Examples: goat, boat and coach.

Writing: The children have been learning the text structure features of an explanation text. They are writing about the topic “How does a Volcano Erupt.” Children were able to explain each stage and include labelled diagrams of a volcano to go with their writing.

Maths: This term children are learning Fractions. Classroom work has involved children learning to model and represent unit fractions and their multiples to a complete whole.

Concert: Just a reminder to return your child’s concert bag to school. There is still plenty of time as concert has been rescheduled for the 17th November.

Homework has started back up this week and will be due on the 4th November.

Home:

  • Reading – Continue to ask questions before, during and after reading. Completing activities on Essential Assessment in My Literacy.
  • Writing – Attempt your own explanation piece of writing. Explaining how something works or why something happens.
  • Spelling – Practice writing a limerick poem with rhyming words from our spelling words. Example: goat, boat, soap, coat, etc...
  • Maths – Order unit fractions up to fifths on a number line from smallest to largest and vice versa. Completing activities on Essential Assessment in My Numeracy.
