The Victorian Interschool Ski & Snowboard Competition

The Victorian Interschools Ski & Snowboard Competition is the largest inter school sporting competition in Victoria. It takes place at Mt Buller over a week in August every year with over 5000 competitors.

On the 27th of August at Mount Buller MGC had a number of participants enter the SSV Mogul Ski and Snowboard World Victorian Interschools Snowsport Championships. One of our most successful athletes was Charlotte Lam. Charlotte is in year 11 and placed 5th in the Victorian Interschools Snowboard Slopestyle. In what was an extremely close competition with 3 points between 2nd and 5th place, Charlotte was awarded 72 points. Charlotte then went on to compete at Perisher in the National competition a week later and impressively finished in 4th with 56 points. Unfortunately, missing the Bronze Medal by 0.25 points! An incredible effort and amazing achievement. The whole team were very proud of Charlotte.

We also had another successful student, Sasha Economos of Year 11 - at the Victorian Interschools - Division 1 Mogul ski 2022. Sasha finished 11th in Victoria which is an incredible achievement at the Mount Buller event. Sasha then went on to compete at the Australian National Interschools a week later at Perisher, representing Victoria and MGC. Sasha tried her hardest at Nationals and had the 19th best individual run score in the division 1 moguls. Great effort Sasha! Pictured below is Sasha getting some big air on a jump on her qualifying event.

And lastly, a big thanks to Scott and Maya Garrett for always assisting in the running of our MGC team. We had more new students sign up this year and the event participation from our skiers seems to get larger each year. The team couldn’t run without Scott and Maya, we are very lucky to have such passionate people in our community to get this event up each year. Thank you to Scott for keeping us updated and supplying the attached photos. MGC will back, bigger and better next year!

5th – 9th of October – HEALTH AND PE WEEK

Our Health and PE week took place in week 9 of Term 3. Our Sport and Diversity Captains developed various activities and competitions to promote health and physical activity. Our Captains managed each event and promoted each activity, providing the MGC school community opportunities to better their understanding of health and get active.

At the beginning of HPE week our 2022 Sport Captain, Erica Brown Yamada and the Diversity captains implemented a lunch time session, focussing on Diverse Games. These games were drawn from different cultures, while highlighting the history of each game. Our Diversity Captains conducted a game of Seven Stones, a game which originated from India. In addition, our Sport captains also implemented a game of Buroinjin, an Indigenous game played by the Kabi Kabi people of southern Queensland. It was great to see so many students get involved and enjoy a new game.

Throughout HPE week, our Sports Captains ran various activities to encourage MGC to be physically active and promote health. This included the Daily Mile, Yoga, a Healthy Recipe competition and the HPE Kahoot, which was won by Ellie Fazakerley. In spirit of the AFL finals, we thought it would be appropriate to incorporate some footy themed competitions. Several students came along to participate, and it was Zara Lanigan who came out on top, winning the longest kick competition while Gabrielle Simcox won the footy target competition. A big thank you to our Sport Captains, Diversity Captains, and our wonderful PE staff for their support throughout HPE week. It was great to see so many students and teachers get involved and be active.

Tuesday the 13th of September – Year 7 Badminton State Finals and Senior Basketball State Finals at MSAC.

On Tuesday the 13th of September our Year 7 Badminton Team participated in the State Finals. Our Year 7s got off to a strong start, winning their first game against Ballarat. The Year 7s went into the next round feeling confident against Narre Warren. The second round was close and competitive, after two matches the scores were level. Our Year 7 Badminton team worked extremely hard and displayed great teamwork. Unfortunately, we lost last match against Narre Warren, however it wasn’t over yet. Our year 7s made it through to the Semi Finals, against Balwyn. It was an exciting game and the Year 7s gave it their all, taking control of the match. Sadly, the results did not go in our favour, losing the Semi Final against Balwyn. However, the Year 7s played exceptionally well throughout the tournament and should be extremely proud of themselves. A big thank you to Levina Goenawan for all her support with coaching the Team.

Our Senior Basketball Team represented MGC at the State Championships, which took place at MSAC. The day was full of excitement and anticipation! Our Seniors went into the first game feeling nervous, but also excited for what the day entailed. In round 1, the Seniors came out strong. They worked as a team, continuously backing each other up, which resulted with their first win against Lowanna, 41 -21.  This was very exciting, providing our team with certainty going into the 2nd game. The 2nd game was a thrilling match with our Seniors putting extraordinary pressure around the ball and taking every opportunity to score against their opposition. This resulted with another win against Berwick SC 38 – 18, gaining a position in the Grand Final!

Heading into the Grand Final, they knew it was going to be a competitive, against Box Hill. Our Seniors came out firing, matching Box Hill’s level of intensity, playing an excellent offensive game. By half time MGC were only down by 6 points. The second half was challenging. However, our Seniors maintained a high level of intensity, continuously driving to the ring and take every opportunity to stay in the game. Although our Seniors did not win their final game, they displayed exceptional levels of teamwork and skill. Well done! A big thank you to Leigh Hanley for the continuous updates on our Seniors progress and for her support throughout the day. Congratulations to our Senior Basketball team on being awarded the 2022 Runners up State Champions. Bring on 2023!
