ON BEING HUMBLE

The Gospel for this week talks about being humble.

Humility is a quality that often is not appreciated, yet it is a quality that all leaders need to possess, at least to some degree. No one person has all the answers or all of the wisdom.

If we are humble - grounded - we won’t “blow our own trumpet” but know who we really are, both our strengths and our weaknesses.

A humble person will freely ask for advice or wisdom and will acknowledge when they need help.

As we say goodbye to our Year 12s this weekend, I reflect on their journey through the College, and the type of people we’d like them to be in the future.

RNDM Sister Maureen McBride gave some good advice to her community, which has echoes for all of us, especially our graduates:

We need gifts of inner strength and resilience, humility and simplicity, the readiness to admit, “I was wrong!”, and to say, “I’m sorry!” We must be grounded in the reality of the present, and have an eye to the future!  We need time to rest, to lick wounds in order to be able to ponder and wonder again.

Jesus has given each of us many gifts. Together, as the People of God, and especially with our Year 12s, we can enrich our world and make it a loving and peaceful place!
