Maths Talent Quest

The Maths Association of Victoria have announced that Louise Eymin of 8B has won first prize in the 2022 Maths Talent Quest.

A talented mathematician and a talented musician, Louise chose The Mathematics Behind Sound as the topic for her project. The first section of her project investigated the mathematics involved in the study of music, the second section investigated the mathematical concepts behind sound itself and the third section explored sound recognition using mathematics. As part of the project, Louise played Pachelbel’s Canon in D and used mathematics to analyse the repetitive structure of its rhythm and patterns.

All projects were ranked on Originality, Mathematical Content, Communication and Presentation. The judges commented that Louise’s project had in-depth investigative processes with clear indications of the mathematics involved at a level above expectation.

Louise’s project was judged to be the best individual project by a Year 8 student in Victoria. The Maths Association of Victoria sent only one entry from each year level in each category to represent the state in the Australian Maths Talent Quest where Louise’s project was highly commended.

Along with a $50 voucher, Louise attended a ceremony at IMAX Melbourne on Thursday 20 October where she received a prize certificate for her entry into the national Maths Talent Quest.

Congratulations Louise.
