K-2 Books to Support Home Reading

Decodable Readers to support home reading

We recently surveyed parents to identify how we can better support families with home reading. The majority of parents indicated their preference is for the school to send home decodable readers rather than access the online platform. As a result, we have invested approx $13 000.00 to purchase readers needed for the school's home reading program and to supplement resources for the Kindy to Year 2 classes.

To consolidate the explicit teaching of phonological awareness (hearing, isolating and manipulating sounds at the beginning, middle and end of words) we have purchased additional decodable readers that will be used both in the classroom and for home reading. In class, students will have the opportunity to read many of the texts with the teacher in differentiated whole class instruction, in pairs with their fluency partners, or in groups with students learning the same phonic code. Students are taught the code within texts prior to sending each book home for practice with their parents, and for independent practice.

To maximise reading at school and home we have carefully chosen Australian Decodable Readers and Little Learner's Love Literacy in both imaginative texts and informational texts. This will facilitate students being exposed to a variety of very engaging layouts, fonts, characters and publishing styles. Students will also have increased opportunities to building content knowledge, background knowledge and vocabulary through reading information and non-fiction texts while learning to successfully lift the words off the page. For use at school, we have also purchased write and wipe fluency cards for Stage 1 and Stage 2 students who are learning the extended code.
