Year 4 Excursion

Georges River Environmental Education Centre

On Monday 24th October, the Year 4 students visited the Georges River Environmental Education Centre (GREEC). Despite the rain, students were still able to participate in engaging indoor activities to explore features and characteristics of the environment. These included map drawing, using kinetic sand to build a catchment area, meeting Bluey the blue tongue lizard and investigating the cleanliness of water in the river. Our students were excited and enjoyed their day at GREEC.

Many thanks to Miss Ta, Miss Wang and Mrs Gonzales for organising such a wonderful and enjoyable excursion. Here are some comments by our students about the excursion...

"My thoughts about the excursion are that it was amazing. You could touch the blue-tongued lizard named Bluey and you could also touch real animal fur. If it was not raining, you could walk past the beach."

"On the excursion to Georges River someone in my class and I made kinetic sand. It was fun to touch the stick insect."

"The Georges River excursion was extremely enjoyable. The bus to the excursion was shaking while we were on it and it was really fun. I got to touch a blue-tongued lizard and a stick insect. It was probably one of the best experiences I’ve ever had."

"The excursion was exceptionally fun! The bus ride there and back was also a little fun. We saw how water works and also played with sand. We got to weave some grass and listen to Aboriginal stories. We saw fascinating animals like frogs, fish, touched a blue-tongued lizard and saw tiny animals living in nice or polluted water and finally got to feel some animal fur."

"I enjoyed learning about the animals that live near the Georges River. It was really interesting touching the dead animals because they replaced the eyes with plastic eyes and they took out the lungs and heart because it might stink over the days or years."

"The thing I enjoyed most about the excursion to Georges River was getting to see the reptiles and pet reptiles. It was fun even though it was raining. Hopefully, next year when the Year 3's are in Year 4, it is nice and sunny."

Erica 4H

"The Georges River excursion was great and the best part about it for me was when I patted the blue-tongued lizard. The future Year 4's should go on this excursion because you get to go to the beach (if it's not raining) and you get to see the garden. You might even go bird watching. I say this because I saw binoculars at the educational centre. There are lots of animals there and also stuffed animals that’s are not alive."

Cobie 4K

"The thing I enjoyed most is when we went into a room with many animals like turtles, frogs, lizards and snakes. We also got to know if water is clean or dirty. The reason you should go to the Georges River excursion is because it was fun learning about the Georges River’s history, what Aboriginal people did in the area and how they used it."

Nathan 4K

"The most thrilling part about the Year 4 excursion was the biodiversity room where we looked at taxidermies. There were preserved possums, echidnas, fish, rabbits, duck, etc. The people knew a lot about the safety of the environment and the environment in general. Therefore, I loved the Georges River Environment Education Centre (GREEC). Don’t fear the taxidermies!"

"At George’s River I had a fascinating time. My one and only favourite activity was looking at the dead animals. Mrs Ant, our teacher for this session, told us thrilling information, about how they were stuffed and killed. Some were poisoned or run over by a car. They were stuffed with filling and put on display for people to learn and admire. If you are doing this activity I recommend to pat the animals gently as the fur may fall out. But most importantly have a fantastic time."
