In JLC each morning last week, we honoured Mary by saying a decade of the Rosary.
During remote learning, we learnt that October is the month that is dedicated to Mary and we pay homage to her by saying the Rosary. Apart from the Sign of The Cross, the Hail Mary and the Our Father prayers that the children know well both in English and Italian, they also listened to other prayers that were read by the teacher showing them the correct way that the Rosary is recited. Last week saw the return to whole school Masses on Wednesday each month. We prepare for these by studying the Gospel that will be read by Father before we go to Mass on Wednesdays. Last week’s Gospel was The Story of the ten lepers; The Thankful Leper from St Luke's Gospel (17:11-19). As a class we read the Gospel and watched a video that made the Gospel easier for the students to understand as it was in children friendly language. The message in the Gospel is further reinforced by completing an activity in class.
Over the last two weeks in writing, JLC have been working on the genre of Poetry. Our focus was on writing an Acrostic poem. An Acrostic poem is a poem that uses the letters of a focus word to begin each line of the poem, The word is written down vertically on the left side of the page. Each letter in the focus word begins a complete thought (word or sentence) about the topic, beginning with the given letter. Children are introduced to acrostic poems early in primary school, as they can understand the concept and it makes for a really engaging activity during writing lessons. For the children’s first acrostic poem they were asked to choose a child in our classroom, think about what they are like and use the letters of their name to write an acrostic poem about them.
JLC students were very excited to celebrate Book Week and enjoyed dressing up as their favourite characters from a wide variety of books. Here are some of their recounts describing their favourite parts of the day.
On Tuesday was Book Week. We first did a big parade. I was an Enderman from the Diary of an Enderman. There were really cool costumes. Then we went into our groups. Our first activity was a drawing competition. We were going to draw a crumbling castle. They were announcing the winners on Thursday. We also did a word search, after you finished you got a prize. I got a Christmas tree with mini rubbers in it.

Whoo Hoo! It’s Book Week.
I was dressed up as Pugicorn. We went into the classroom and sat down and took a photo. Then we went outside and talked about what we were wearing.
Next we went to different classrooms to do fun activities. We all did a crumbling castle. It was an art competition that Mrs Dunn was going to judge and pick a winner.

I just loved Book Week so much.
I loved Lilith's costume. She dressed up as Wednesday Addams and I loved everyone else's costume.

Hooray it is Book Week! I went dressed up like Harry Potter and Sam was dressed up like an astronaut. Then we did prayer and went outside of the classroom and did a parade. We were showing our costumes and telling who we were. After the parade we took a picture and went to our groups. In our groups we drew castles. There were also games. Then it was recess.
