What's happening in our classrooms

Grade 1

Grade One

English

This term in Writing, we have been learning how to write explanation texts. We have learnt how to:

- use time connectives to sequence our steps

- write a macro sentence at the start of our texts to explain what the topic is

- write a linking sentence to connect our macro sentence with our explanation steps.

We have also used our describing skills to add detail to each step of our explanations.

We have written explanation texts about the life cycles of living things and have also written to explain how to complete certain tasks, such as making bread.

Maths

This term in Maths, we have been consolidating our understanding of two-digit place value. This is our ‘big idea’ in Grade 1 and the concept that we need to make sure we are experts in, to help us with our learning in Maths in the future.

We have been practising modelling two-digit numbers using a variety of materials, such as tens frames, unifix cubes and icy-pole stick bundles. We have explored two-digit numbers as tens and ones using pictures and numbers and have learnt about the relative size of number, understanding how to order and compare two-digit numbers.

We have been completing lots of different activities and playing a variety of games involving two-digit numbers, such as ‘Three in a Row’, ‘Mastermind’, ‘Connect Four’ and ‘Race to the Nineties’. You might like to try some of these games at home!

Inquiry

This term in Inquiry, we have been learning about science. We have learnt a lot about forces, such as push and pull, and also how light and sound are produced. We took a trip to the local playground to explore forces in the play equipment. We have also investigated different sources of light and how sounds are caused by vibrations.

We have conducted a range of experiments to explore how light and sound work, including making paper cup ‘telephones’, speaking through a balloon to feel the vibrations and we made a ‘peek box’ to investigate how light helps us see things in the world around us. We are currently designing a robot that can produce sounds and light.
