INTERNATIONAL VISITORS

A Highly Sought-after Opportunity

Earlier this term Kew High School was lucky enough to host a group of scholarship students from the Beijing National Day School in China. The scholarship is a highly sought-after opportunity in China, with the Victorian Department of Education paying for 20 students to come to Victoria. Students were required to go through a rigorous process in order to be accepted.

Along with Camberwell and Northcote High Schools, Kew hosted five students along with their teacher for a period of three weeks. The students and teacher were billeted in homestay accommodation in the community and were chaperoned around the school by our very capable Year 10 student leaders.

In their time at Kew the Chinese students attended Year 10 and Year 11 classes, participating in all classroom activities. They also went on a number of excursions including to the National Gallery, the Queen Victoria Market, Federation Square and sailing at Albert Park. The students took part in many in school activities such as a cooking class and a visit to the annual swimming carnival during their stay.

I would like to express my appreciation to all the staff involved in the program including all Year 10 and Year 11 teachers who helped the students as well as Catherine Reid, Junling Yang, Daveen Valentine, Belinda Geddes, Katherine Smith and Tom Williams who all made the program possible. I also want to give special thanks to our fabulous Year 10 leaders Mimi Lye, Annabelle Davey, Zoe Austen, Cameron Clarke, Zak Holland and Stefan Koukounaras who made the students’ time at Kew a memorable and welcoming one. Without these leadership students the program wouldn’t have been such a success.
