A Message from the Principal

Mrs Pauline Long

Dear Parents and Carers,

NSW  English K-2 Syllabus and Mathematics K-2 Syllabus

Yesterday the new syllabuses for English and Mathematics were released which is exciting for our teachers. Extensive research has been undertaken to create documents which will be user friendly for teachers and relevant to the needs of our students. The reforms evident in the syllabuses include structures which highlight foundational Literacy and Numeracy skills. The importance of students developing competence in oral language is an example of a foundational skill.  Oral language is closely linked to success in both reading and writing and will be a focus area for our school next year.

You will hear a lot in the media about a return to phonics. I assure you we use phonics as one important element of teaching students to read. However, for students to become balanced readers we also teach sight words, expose the students to rich literature and work daily in small guided groups on reading fluently and on comprehension skills.

With regard to Mathematics we have been fortunate to be working on the diocesan Mathematics project and the work we have completed is closely aligned to the new syllabus. Students are encouraged to explore and make connections between mathematical concepts. Teachers pose questions that encourage students to explain their thinking and reasoning.

Next year we will be offering parents a number of information sessions about how students learn to read, write and work mathematically.

Character Strength: Perseverance

This week we are encouraging our students to work on their ability to persevere on a difficult task or skill. I would like to share a great example of perseverance from three of our students whilst playing a Representative Cricket game in Armidale last weekend. Cooper, Charlie & Ricky played against a much stronger side but they played with grit and determination and never gave up, even though they didn’t win. Well done boys!

Tomorrow during sport, our students will be showcasing their improved skipping skills; which all classes have been working on this term. Learning to skip and then further develop more advanced skipping routines are examples of how students can develop perseverance.

Canteen

Don't forget to support the school canteen operating every Friday until the end of term. Those delicious home made pizzas are back on the menu for this week!

Have a happy and safe week
