Assistant Principal's Report

Looking Forward

Term four is always an interesting term. It is a term where schools are in the midst of finishing the current school year while at the same time, planning for the year ahead. I recall this time last year, we were thinking “thank goodness remote learning is over”. We were excited at the thought of a new year, hopeful that it would bring stability and normality.

A year later, we are transitioning back to onsite learning again, and readjusting to being at school with everyone. The return to onsite learning this year has been a different experience for everyone. Most are excited and positive. Others are apprehensive and anxious. The return to onsite learning can be an overwhelming and exhausting time.

As a school, we are very aware that every day may be different for everyone, some days are going to be harder than others. Teachers use many strategies to support students adjusting to being back at school, although routine and structure are in place, there is an understanding that we need to get used to working together again, refamiliarize ourselves with the expectations and processes involved in the classroom, the yard, and the specialist programs.

Teachers are delivering explicit lessons that are targeting students’ academic needs as well as being mindful of the emotional and wellbeing needs of the class. Many classes have been extending beyond the classroom walls and I have enjoyed many mornings reading with different classes under the fig tree or in the amphitheatre. There is a sense of togetherness and gratitude for the fact that we are all at school and can enjoy being together, learning together and playing together.

While students are getting back into the swing of things at school, behind the scenes we are planning and preparing for the coming year. Term four is the time we confirm the workforce for the following year, organise students into their new classes, plan programs, camps, and excursions. Look for details of teacher placement and classroom organisation in a subsequent newsletter.

We are hopeful that things will be a lot smoother as we move into 2023, the past few weeks have given us a glimpse of what we can expect during the summer holidays and beyond – there is much to look forward to!
