Action for Happiness

Mindfulness prepares me for the day.

Last term we introduced a calendar with various actions that families can practise throughout the month from the website ACTION FOR HAPPINESS.

I have included another item besides the calendar called Starting the Day in a Mindful Way in this newsletter.

Conscious breathing and mindfulness are significant components of our wellbeing practices at Holy Family. Children participate in mindfulness at the beginning of each learning block. They commence the day with prayers that call for quiet reflection. After each play break, the children participate in mindfulness breathing, which has many benefits. Firstly it prepares the children for their learning. Secondly, it gives students who may have experienced discord during recess time to reset themselves. Thirdly, any opportunity children have to develop a skill they can add to their 'emotional toolkit' is valuable.

Look at some things that can be implemented before starting the school day. I will practise mindfully eating my breakfast instead of playing 'Words With Friends' on my phone in the morning. I'd like to think I will start the day with a run or a swim, aka Mrs Sykes, but I will start small!

I love the actions for this month. My wise husband told me recently, when I was worrying about something, "When the phone rings in your head, don't take the call."  In other words, he reminded me to put things in perspective and that I am responsible for dwelling on a problem or shifting my thoughts.
