JTC students at the Get Into Resources expo

The Get Into Resources annual event provides students with a wide range of engaging activities to inspire and create interest for the next generation in the resources industry. 

Thirty of our John XXIII students from Years 11 and 12 experienced either ATAR or VET hands on sessions, which were presented and facilitated by resource industry professionals such as Engineers and Geologists.

The event was sponsored and attended by key resource industry companies including BHP, Rio Tinto, Sandfire, Mineral Resources and Gold Industry Group.

Early Offers Now Available

All universities in WA have made early offers available for 2023. 

• If you apply early, you gain no advantage over those who apply later in the year. 
• If you are not sure what courses you want to do, get some free career advice from the Pathways and Transition office and your university of choice before you apply.

University Course Guides: 2023

Before applying to study a course, students looking to engage in tertiary study at university (particularly Year 12 students) should spend some time browsing through university course guides to gain an awareness of all courses and majors of interest. Most universities add and/or change courses and course majors from year to year. Here are some links to the 2023 course guides for WA universities. Be sure to look for the undergraduate guides in the first instance:

Curtin New ATAR Achievement Scholarship

How much will it cost you to go to uni?

Curtin introduced a new Scholarship for 2023 to encourage students to focus on their studies in Year 12. The ATAR Achievement Scholarship provides a payment of $3,000 to year 12 applicants who achieve a final ATAR three points above their predicted ATAR score.

The ATAR Achievement Scholarship applies to undergraduate courses except the Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery.

Applying for the scholarship is easy – students simply apply for admission to a Curtin course through TISC with Curtin as their first preference.

Applicants who achieve an ATAR of 96+ will be awarded the Curtin Excellence Scholarship which is of higher value.

Curtin New Digital Innovation and Fabrication Design Major

Innovation is a key driver in design of future technologies, and manufacturing products. 

The National Careers Institute identified 4 key job growth areas to the year 2026:

• Health care and social assistance

More Curtin Faculty Updates

• Science and Engineering: Bachelor of Science in 2023 will have double majors, minors and specialisations. Entry into Bachelor of Science ATAR will be 70 in 2023 (note: some courses may still have prerequisite requirements).
   
• Business and Law: For all career practitioners, educators and parents. Curtin's newest microcredential launched just last month and is a collaboration with Stanford University, Curtin and the Australian Technology Network of Universities (ATN). Curtin Increases Entry Requirements for Teacher Education Degrees

As part of its quest to develop outstanding teachers, Curtin has diversified and intensified its entry requirements: 

Non-academic entry requirement: 

Curtin University School of Education Qualtrics Questionnaire for all applicants

For entry to initial teacher education (ITE) courses, you will need to meet both the academic and non-academic entry requirements.

To meet the non-academic entry requirements, applicants must demonstrate they have the key characteristics, attributes and motivations common to effective teachers, as outlined by the Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL).

To demonstrate this, you will need to complete an online Qualtrics questionnaire as part of your application. The questionnaire must be completed no more than one year prior to application.

The Bachelor of Education (Secondary Education) has prerequisites for certain majors as outlined below:

Main Offer Round – NOW OPEN !

St George’s College have just concluded our Early Offer Round with offers sent for up to 40% of available places. The Main Offer Round is now open and will close on: 31 August 2022.

AIS Elite Athlete Education Network

The Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) facilitates an Elite Athlete Education Network (EAEN) through partnered Universities, TAFE’s and other education providers, which helps to support elite athletes for the duration of their course study. This ensures their experience on campus is one that is rewarding, flexible and helps them acquire the right skills and qualifications needed to follow their passions and interests outside of sport.

Each AIS endorsed university will have an Elite Athlete Student Coordinator to support athlete experience on campus and implement the underpinning guiding principles of the Elite Athlete Education Network.

Endorsed members of the EAEN commit to a range of guiding principles and minimum standards through consultation with the AIS. This is a national network that supports Australian athletes within the high-performance sport system.

If you want to go to university but didn’t get the ATAR you need, or if you are not certain what course to take, a university preparation course will help you to clarify your ideas before you start paying fees. 

You will learn:

• how to do university assignments and referencing, 
• what to expect and how to study at university and 
• make friends in a safe, uncompetitive environment before you start on your degree.

Army Support Gap Year

Experience being part of one of the largest logistics organisations in Australia during your Army Gap Year.

An Army Support Gap Year role is a unique opportunity for students to experience life in the Army, without needing to make a long-term commitment.  The skills obtained through the Army Support Gap Year program will provide them valuable work and life experience, which are transferable to civilian employment opportunities.  It enables Gap Year members personal and professional development for their next endeavour. 

In an Army Support role, recruits will learn logistic and task management skills to ensure the Army has the necessary supplies for exercises and humanitarian operations.  Gap Year recruits can experience what life in the Army is like in one of three rewarding Army Support Gap Year roles.  They may assist in the movement of supplies as a Driver, manage logistics as a Warehouse Coordinator, or become the point of contact within a unit as an Administration Assistant.

SENIOR STUDENTS IN FOCUS

Deciding where to belong for Year 12s

These tips and tricks are a start towards supporting Year 12s to decide where they want to belong next year. 

There is research being undertaken to identify just how we can best support students who have had such disruptions to their education. 

These tips may help while we wait for research results. 

Years 7 to 12 WAAPA Music Theatre School 

We welcome students who are passionate about Music Theatre and want to be challenged to expand their skills within a supportive community of peers and professional staff.

Years 7 to 12 WAAPA Acting and Performance Making 

WAAPA’s Acting and Performance Making students have the opportunity to increase their confidence as they apply their skills to stage and screen performances.

This is the official manual that delivers key information about the WA Certificate of Education.

2022 SCSA Year 12 Handbook Part I

Part 1 of the SCSA Information for all Students is out now. 

This is the one with:

• important dates, 
• how to use the student portal (you must complete the Student Declaration and Permission by 8 September)
• information about the WACEChecker 
• special exam arrangements
• how to meet literacy and numeracy requirements
• school assessments

You need to be familiar with the Year 12 Information Handbook if you are in Year 12.

Part II, Examinations will be out later in the year. 

YEAR 10 IN FOCUS

The John XXIII Year 11 Handbook has been updated and is accessible to parents via SEQTA. It is a great idea for students and families to spend some time discussing subject options for Year 11 and 12 as well as possible pathways after school- the two are very much connected. Year 10 students have been exploring pathways and careers in their weekly Pathway Planning classes. 

On Wednesday 29 June (Week 10) Year 10 students will participate in a subject and pathways expo whereby they will hear about senior subject options from the Heads of Learning Areas and interact with representatives from several universities, TAFEs, private Registered Training Organisations and the Australian Defence Force. The Year 10 Pathway Planning day is a great opportunity for students to explore their options for senior school and beyond.

It is a useful resource for Year 10s no matter what university they want to go to.

School Based Traineeships in the Public Sector for 2023

The public sector School-based Traineeship provides students entering Year 11 an exciting opportunity to gain on the job experience through paid employment.

Over the 18 month traineeship students work towards a Certificate II in Government (Public Administration) which counts towards their Western Australian Certificate of Education (WACE).

Around July each year the Public Sector Commission calls for applications from Year 10 public and private school students and supports agencies with recruitment. Find out more below.

MIDDLE SCHOOL IN FOCUS

National Pitchfest Competition

Pitchfest and Village Cinemas have joined forces to create the ultimate school excursion and pitching competition, teaching students how to solve problems and bring ideas to life - in the cinemas. Students can enjoy the cinematic experience and learn fundamental skills at the same time! Details here.

Respect Stories competition

Students aged 10-14 years old are encouraged to enter the 2022 Respect Stories competition.

To enter, students are invited to produce a short story, poem or essay of up to 1,000 words, or an illustration, exploring what respect means to them.

This is a great opportunity for students to reflect on and share their understanding of respect – while also encouraging parents and teachers to have open, ongoing and proactive conversations on this important issue.

Eight written and two illustrative winning entries will be published in a national Respect Stories book. The winners will also take home a $500 VISA gift card for themselves and one for their school.

School Years 9 and above:  WAAPA Propeller Youth Dance Course

Challenge your contemporary dance technique, build skills in creative practice and choreography, collaborate with other young people passionate about dance and feel a part of a youth dance experience.

The course is designed for young people who are either intending to pursue dance as a career or who simply love dance and would like to continue to improve their dance skills. Each Term will culminate in a short sharing for family and friends.

Dates: Sundays for 8 weeks per term Time: 10.00am - 1.00pm

Genius Armoury opportunity for Neurodiverse People

Genius Armoury offers a range of courses to help introduce neurodiverse individuals to cybersecurity, exploring some of the fundamentals of coding, threats, and exploits, networking, and more. Available to anyone and free to complete, modules only take around 30 minutes to complete.

Successful completion of the program may provide eligibility to those located in Western Australia for enrol in a Bachelor of Science course in Cybersecurity at Curtin without an eligible ATAR, through the Portfolio entry system.

Spotlight: double degrees and the Ramsay Scholarship at The University of Queensland

• European Double Degrees

As part of the Bachelor of Engineering (Honours)/Master of Engineering program, students are offered the exciting opportunity to study overseas with one of UQ’s premier European partners.  Selected students will spend at least three semesters studying in either Italy, Germany, France, or Sweden.  Students will gain an invaluable global perspective, international industry experience, and will graduate with two master degrees - one from the partner university and one from The University of Queensland.

• UQ Ramsay Undergraduate Scholarship

Valued at $30,000 per year for up to 5.5 years and intended for academic Australian high achieving students who desire to make a difference in the world. They are for students who are creative and intellectually curious with the critical skills to challenge the status quo and cross boundaries, and who value discussion, debate, and the opportunity to learn from others.  

The purpose of the scholarship is to support students undertaking a sequence of study in Western Civilisation either through the Bachelor of Advanced Humanities (Honours) program or the dual Bachelor of Humanities/Bachelor of Laws (Honours) program.

Monash University offers an excellent Diploma of Tertiary Studies (DoTS) pathway program into a few of its undergraduate degrees.  The pathway programs offered at the Peninsula Campus are:

Diploma of Tertiary Studies – Business: Upon successful completion of the DoTS - Business stream students can apply to enter into the second year of the Bachelor of Business Administration (Peninsula) OR the Bachelor of Business (Caulfield) depending upon their mathematics preparation, and their average marks in the DoTS program.

Diploma of Tertiary Studies – Education: Upon successful completion of the DoTS - Education stream students can apply to enter into the second year of the Bachelor of Education (Honours) in several specialisations.
