Magis report

The second grand final of the House Public Speaking Competition was held on Monday evening in the Gonzaga Barry Lecture Theatre (GBLT). This additional grand final was held for the students who were unable to attend Week 3’s event. The presentations were thoroughly engaging and the standard across the board was exceptionally high. I congratulate all the grand finalists on their exemplary performances. Special thanks to alumni students Ben Negus (Class 2021), Alex Panther, and Ben Linsten (Class 2020) for adjudicating both grand finals.

Round 6 of WADL Debating continued via the Zoom platform on Tuesday evening – with some narrow wins and narrow losses across the board. All teams performed admirably, and I congratulate all our debaters on an outstanding effort. Whilst this round marks the completion of the WADL Debating heats – there are some rescheduled/postponed debates which will be completed over the next couple of weeks – after which time, a list of finalists will be released. All teams are reminded that they must check the WA Debating League website for up-to-date fixtures, as well as their respective Teams pages.

Calling all maths and science enthusiasts! Nominations for the 2022 FameLab Academy Competition are now open. FameLab is the world’s leading science communication competition that aims to discover charismatic early career scientists who can inspire people to see the world from new perspectives. The Fogarty Foundation has partnered with the Foundation for the WA Museum to establish FameLab Academy, a school’s initiative for Years 9 and 10 students to encourage their interest in STEM and develop their science communications skills. Students are required to present for 3 minutes on a Maths or Science topic of their choosing. The College will select a finalist to compete in the FameLab Academy State Final which will be held at the Heath Ledger Theatre later this year. For more information, please see Ms Farley (Magis Coordinator) or Mr Carrello (Head of Learning Area – Science).
