Assistant Principal Report - Junior School and Wellbeing

June Sainsbery

Term Two has been one week shorter than normal, but the rapid switch to colder weather earlier this month has made the term feel a bit longer.  Having said that, there have been many highlights from this term.  In week five, I had the privilege of attending the Year 9 camp.  Staff enjoyed the opportunity to spend time getting to know the students better.  The students were able to participate in a wide variety of outdoor activities, listen to guest speakers and had a chance to reflect on their personal growth as they become young adults.  A big thank you to the Year 9 team Michelle Lynch, Marisa Di Paola, and Carly Gaffney for organising such a terrific camp.

Year 9 students have moved into new electives for Semester Two and will begin their course counselling journey early in Term Three.  It is imperative that parents/carers and students read all relevant emails and information that will be disseminated in relation to the course counselling process that will occur in term three.  Please note that our Year 9 into 10 Information Evening will be held at 6.30pm on Tuesday 19th July in the Senior Centre.

Year 8 students who study Japanese participated in a cultural day on Thursday 16th June during periods 1 – 4.  I was able to attend the first session which was fantastic.  Mr Dunne, who joined the college this year, spoke passionately about Japanese language and culture, which included some wonderful and entertaining stories about how he came to love Japan.  School Vice-Captain Madi Strange and School Captain Rocco Lemmo also addressed the students about their reasons for studying Japanese language all the way to Year 12.  Ashar Patel, from Year 10, played on keyboard ‘Merry-go-round’ from the anime movie ‘Howls Moving Castle’.  Such a beautiful piece.  The students also participated in workshops that involved calligraphy, kendo, and comedy. They enjoyed a bento box for lunch. Please note that our Year 8 into 9 Information Evening will be held at 6.30pm on Monday July 25th in the Senior Centre.

We held an information evening for Year 7 parents on Wednesday 22 June.  It was great to meet our parents in person for the first time this year and have the opportunity to answer many of their questions.  The Year 7 team are preparing for camp, which will be held in week three.

I hope everyone has a safe and relaxing holiday.
