Careers update

What is happening in Careers?

There has been a lot happening over the past few weeks in the Careers and Future Pathways Department.

Year 10 subject selection interviews

Year 10 students have commenced their subject selection interviews. This 30-minute interview involves me giving students further feedback on their Morrisby Profile Testing and the discussion of pre-requisite subjects that may be required for university or TAFE courses they are interested in studying post-school. Students are given the opportunity to explore what some of the courses they are interested in look like, in terms of subjects they will study. It is hoped that these meetings will assist them in making decisions around their VCE subject selections.

Year 10 work experience

We are very excited that after two years of not being able to offer work experience opportunities due to COVID-19, this week we have our Year 10 students out in various businesses experiencing the world of work. We have students placed in the following industries; law, administration, physiotherapy, medical, retail, accounting, Chinese medicine, jewellery design, sound recording, primary school teaching, pharmacy, marketing, veterinarian services, galleries and art workshops, allied health, child care, dentistry, engineering, exercise science and interior design. They are very excited about learning more about these different careers and what happens in the workplace. We will include some of their stories in the Term 3 newsletters.

‘Future Insights’ presentation morning – 11 August

As part of the school’s Careers 4Sight Program, we will be running a careers event on the morning of 11 August. This will involve both students and parents being invited to attend a presentation by a guest speaker from Arrive and Thrive focused on how to go about Career Path Planning. There will be representatives from Melbourne based Universities and Colleges in attendance for information on particular courses. Students will then attend two presentations of their choice on a range of different careers. These will be presented by Shelfordians and other invited guests and will give an insight into a range of different career paths.

If there are any parents or past students interested in presenting at this event we welcome you to contact Cath Freney at cfreney@shelford.vic.edu.au

This event will provide a wonderful opportunity for students to learn more about things they can be doing now to prepare for their career and to learn more about careers they have an interest in.
