DANTE ALIGHIERI AWARD

Caterina De Maria competed in the Dante Alighieri Poetry reading section of the Mildura Eisteddfod on Friday, June 3. Caterina recited the poem, 'Tutto Cambia' by Diletta Fabiani who is an Italian freelance journalist, writer and poet. The poem had to be under three minutes and impress the judge with her expression and retelling of the emotive poem.

Caterina placed first in that section as well as the overall Dante Alighieri Award winner.

Ottimo lavoro, Caterina!

VICTORIAN STATE TITLES JIU JITSU

I have recently competed in the State Titles for Jiu Jitsu. I came third and won a bronze medal.

I have been passionate about Jiu Jitsu for a while and I have been training hard and learning more over the past 12 months. I have also learnt that when you work hard and put in the effort, you can do anything.

Jiu Jitsu isn’t like football or soccer where you can train and then play against other clubs. Progress with your team to grand finals and the Olympics are the ultimate goals. There is nothing that I desire more than to win a fight and have the referee raise my hand in the air to signal to everyone in the crowd that I have achieved victory. There is nothing that beats that feeling.

The people I train with including my father, my coaches and the other fighters, are my team and my family and I will always strive to be better for them, myself and being a part of the team. Thank you so much to all those who got me into this sport. I am proud I tried, I am proud I am a part of my team, and I will work hard for what I so love to do.

FAIRFAX YOUTH INITIATIVE - FYI

Over 2021 and 2022 myself and Cooper Rawlinson took part in a program with Fairfax Youth Initiative - FYI.

We participated in workshops on Zoom with other students from schools all over Sunraysia. These workshops helped us think in different ways to write a story that was about us.

We also had one-on-one sessions with a mentor via Zoom who helped us with our stories. Once lockdowns ended, our mentors and a film crew filmed us saying our story. On May 28 all the stories were shown at the film festival at Swan Hill.

UPDATE

Last Saturday, May 28 my family went to Swan Hill for The FYI Film Festival - The Stories That Make Us.

We arrived at about 1:00pm and we finally got to meet everyone for the first time from the Zoom meetings we had during 2021 and 2022. We also had a workshop to get us ready for the night. This was where I met up with Cooper and this workshop was really fun and I learnt a lot.

When the workshop finished there was a candy bar and some food vans and the night began and everyone started coming in and taking photos, and people filming everything.

Mrs Blythman was there too and that was nice. Everyone saw the films that we made. It was a really good night.
