3/4 B

Week 5 Term 1

Reading

Over the past few weeks in reading we have been focussing on the comprehension strategy of making connections. When we make connections we use what we already know and understand to make sense of new information and experiences. We think about what we have done, seen and read.

We also think about:

• Our personal experiences;

• Our social experiences;

• Our cultural experiences.

When we read we can make three types of connections:

- Text to self connections

- Text to text connections

- Text to world connections

Writing

Last week the children took some of their ideas in their Writer’s Notebook and completed a quick write titled: The Keeper of the Keys

Inquiry

Last week we looked at healthy messages in advertising and the sorts of messages we might trust and the ones we can't. Working with a partner, the children reflected on a range of advertisements (old and new) and recorded their responses.

The students have really enjoyed getting out for their ten minute daily health hustle. It’s a great way to start the day and activate both our bodies and our minds. We endeavour to get out every day, except PE days, as we encourage the students to get along to the running club every Tuesday morning. Students can pack their runners in their bags on non PE days if they wish, but must change back into their school shoes after our run / walk.

Maths - roll two dice, add them up, how many can you do in ten minutes? Our class record...98 addition sums in 10 minutes!

Education in Faith

Last week we attended Ash Wednesday Mass at St Francis Xavier Church to begin the season of Lent.. We spoke in class about the three pillars of Lent. The three pillars are: Prayer, Fasting and Almsgiving

Prayer: During Lent, we can pray for others who are in need. We also use this time to talk to God about what is happening in our lives.

Some things that we may do are:

Pray for the sick and needy.

Pray for those who are less fortunate.

Pray for those who are suffering in our community and the world.

Fasting: During Lent, we can give something up to show that we are thinking of the sacrifice that was made by Jesus.

Stop spending money on things we want, and make a donation to a charity.

Give up our favourite food, snack or drink.

Stop being negative towards people, and work on having a more positive attitude.

Stop getting angry or upset with people, and pray for the courage to forgive them.

Almsgiving: During Lent, we can show our love for others by helping. We might choose to donate money to projects or charities and organisations in our community.

Some things that we may do are:

Donate clothes, books, shoes and food to people in need.

Show an act of kindness to a family member each day.

Cook a meal for someone who needs it.

NAPLAN

Our Year 3 and Year 5 students will be sitting the NAPLAN assessments from the 15th-20th March. Your child does not need to do anything extra to prepare for these assessments. We simply encourage our students to do their best on the day.

You can discover more about NAPLAN at https://www.nap.edu.au/

Look forward to seeing you at the Welcome Picnic tomorrow night!
