NAPLAN

Our Year 3 and Year 5 students will be sitting the NAPLAN assessments from the 15th-20th March. Your child does not need to do anything extra to prepare for these assessments. We simply encourage our students to do their best on the day.

You can discover more about NAPLAN at https://www.nap.edu.au/

Education in Faith

During our Education in Faith lessons, we have been discussing our Catholic Identity. Students were asked to choose a picture that represents what it means to be Catholic.  They shared their ideas and recorded their reflections in their Prayer Journals.

Maths

During our Maths lessons we have been focusing on Place Value, these photos are from a game called, ‘Make 100.’  This game involves many mathematical strategies, using their knowledge of place value, addition and subtraction.

Reading Groups

This is one of our Reading Groups, participating in a Teacher Workshop. These students have been working on scanning a text to find information. They were excited to use highlighters, to go back to a text and find specific words or phrases to answer comprehension questions.

Writing

We’ve been busy using our imaginations to brainstorm characters and settings using picture prompts. The focus of brainstorming using picture prompts is to assist students with the planning process of creating a story. It allows them to really think about their character and setting and use mind maps to jot down ideas, so that when they come to writing a story they can refer back to it.

Last week we investigated the image ‘Keeper of the Keys’. Students brainstormed things like, ‘who is the keeper of the keys?’  ‘Why are they guarding the keys?’ ‘Where is this place?’ etc. Students then used their ideas to create a quick write writing piece.

This week we looked at ‘The Magic House’. Some of the setting and character ideas that students came up with connected to their ideas from ‘The Keeper of the Keys’. These included, the magic house village is a portal world protected by the keeper of the keys, it’s on the edge of the forest, a hidden Oasis in the middle of the dessert, magical creatures live there, etc.

Inquiry

This week in Inquiry we’ve been learning about trusting health messages. We watched short clips such as slip, slop, slap, jump rope for heart, Mc Donald’s add, Froot Loops add, swim safe, etc. We then discussed which messages we could trust as being healthy and why or why not?
