Tutor Learning Initiative (TLI)

Take a look at what students working with Mrs Dallas have been up to!

And we're off!

The tutoring program is well underway now, with Mrs Dallas taking over from Ms Bunworth while she is away on leave. It was a slow start to the year, with classroom locations and rearrangements delaying the set-up of the tutoring space. However, the wait was worth it!

After some initial assessments with students to identify their point of need, students have been grouped together to work on similar goals to support their reading development. Students have been attending 30 minute workshops up to four times a week, where they experience a range of targeted, evidence-based instructional strategies that can then be followed up in the classroom.

So far, students have developed their abilities in the following areas:

  • increasing their understanding of how to decode and represent the short 'u' sound with a variety of graphemes and how to choose the correct representation e.g. /ou/, /u/, /o/, or /oo/ as in touch, cut, love and flood
  • segmenting words into isolated phonemes (sounds) and blending the sounds back together
  • scooping words into meaningful groups of 4-5 words when reading aloud, which is known as 'phrasing' and helps to avoid reading words robotically
  • paying attention to the punctuation within a sentence and being able to reflect this in our voices when we read aloud
  • investigating affixes and how they change the meaning of a word, and how we can build families of words from a base or root word

As you can see, it has been a busy few weeks! Mrs Dallas is incredibly proud of all the hard work that students have been putting into making the most of our workshop time together. There is even a group that would like to perform at assembly to show what they've been working on! What a way to show their increased confidence when reading aloud.
