Japanese

This week in Japanese:

Our Foundation students started their Japanese program last week! They learned how to respond to roll taking – putting their hand up and saying ‘Hai’, which means ‘Yes’ or ‘I’m here.’ They also learned greetings in Japanese such as ‘Kon nichiwa’ (Hello). The children then decorated their crown with a rabbit (for the year of the rabbit). I was so proud of them when they cheerfully greeted their parents in Japanese at pick up time. The children have also found where Japan is on the map too! Well done Foundation A and B!

Years 3 to 6 have started learning about a Japanese festival called Setsubun and created a summary of the event. This festival is related to the seasons and involves some important customs. Learning how people celebrate special occasions in other parts of the world and reasons behind these customs enables our young people to not only learn about the outside world, but also reflect on their own culture and understand points of difference. Cultural studies can help our students nurture their natural curiosity and help them develop empathy, tolerance and open-mindedness. Well done Monty senior students!
