STEAM NEWS

Welcome to the STEAM room!

The Foundation students had their first lesson in STEAM and became familiar with all the different types of building materials we have available to us. They built a range of structures using Lego bricks, Unifix interlocking cubes and wooden blocks.

Year 3 students were challenged with making the longest paper chain possible using only one sheet of A3 paper, scissors, and a glue stick. The longest chain was over 7 metres long! Year 4 students used a variety of materials like paper cups, clothes pegs and rubber bands to build the tallest tower possible. This challenge was all about working together as a team, listening to each other, and sharing ideas.

Year 5 students were challenged to make tiny houses using only six index cards and absolutely no adhesives-no sticky tape, no glue whatsoever! Their designs amazed me and some even added outdoor settings and a dog!

Foundation News

We are so proud of all the Foundation students and parents for a wonderful start to the term. We have been getting to know each other, learning routines, and beginning our learning programs. It’s been great to see the children collaborating during developmental play and their excitement to attend specialist classes for the first time! We were grateful to have lunch with our Year 5 buddies and be introduced to the bigger play area together. Some special visitors dropped by our classrooms and informed us of the best and safest way to cross the roads at school. Thank you to Ormond Primary’s crossing supervisors Sue and Roz!

Year 2 News

The Year 2 students have been brainstorming examples of the school value 'Acceptance.' Here are photos of how well they work and play together.

Year 3 & 4 News

The Year 3 and 4 students have had an exciting start to 2023. We were lucky enough to attend an ‘Indigenous Infusion’ incursion where we learnt the meaning behind the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flags, the lyrics and actions to First People’s songs and words such as ‘listen’ and ‘welcome’ in Indigenous languages. We are all excited to further explore these topics during Inquiry this term.

Year 5 News

Year 5 students welcomed three new students, Moonchan, Lenna and Jeremy who have already made friends and settled into Ormond happily. Students made 'Llama Get to Know You' llamas and celebrated the Lunar New Year together. Teachers and students got to know each other through the Llama activity. Here are of their Summer holiday hashtags.

Rounders Round Up

On Friday the 10th of February we travelled to Tucker Road primary school.

We started off active and strong, but later on we lost our concentration.

We soon fell behind as the opposition got a lot of home runs.

Sadly the end score was 2 to 12 in Tucker Road’s favour.

Our star players were Zack for catching and lifting the team spirit, and Alex for pitching and being a good team captain.

Library News

We made some fabulous purchases for the library with the reward points that were collected last year. Over the school holidays these books were catalogued & covered and are up on display in the library. Come in and have a look there is some amazing titles to choose from.

Next week we will be sending out overdue notices for books that were not returned last year. If you receive a Compass notification and cannot find the book, please contact the office for an alternative solution.

Education Support News

We have started the year with a fire in our belly’s ready for the new term. We did miss our students whilst away and was so happy to see all their faces first day back. We have to say a big welcome to Sahar this year for coming on board and joining our little team.

This term, our longest serving Education Support member Michelle De Silva is on long service leave for the first half of the year. We hope Michelle enjoys the quality time with family and friends and catches up on some well-deserved rest.

On a sadder note, Belinda Van Kessell retired from Ormond Primary School on the 8th February. She made a lovely speech to all the staff at her farewell morning tea. Belinda made some beautiful friendships over the time she was at OPS and l firmly believe that these will last for many years to come. Again on behalf of all the education support staff we wish you the best in retirement and will miss you...
