Visual Arts Term 1

Every child is an artist, the problem is staying an artist when you grow up!

Pablo Picasso

Welcome back to art for 2023 and a big welcome to our new families. The children have been excited to be back in their creative space, the art room! Our new preps are mostly familiar with the room from the playgroup last year. I look forward to a year of creativity, fun and of course a bit of mess! Please feel free to pop in before school Tuesdays or Wednesdays and say hello and I will be running a creative careers expo later in the term for our senior students. If you work in a creative industry (for example fashion, photography, interior design etc) and would like to share your passion please contact me, we’d love to have parents share their passions/ expertise!

2023 is another exciting year in the arts as we have our production. Although the production is focussed mainly on performing arts, students across the school will be involved in using their visual arts skills to create props and some of the set. Here is an overview of my program for Term One.

  • Tours of the art room
  • Being a STAR artist (setting expectations and establishing routines)
  • Introduction of visual diaries
  • Indigenous Australian art linking to our whole school unit ‘On This Land’
  • ‘Welcome to Country’ whole school display
  • Creative careers expo (Senior students)
  • Printmaking (Junior students)

Visual Arts Awards

Two students from each class will receive a Visual Arts award at the end of the term. These awards will be given to students who consistently display the STAR values in the art room over the term. Along with a certificate, there will be an art prize to encourage creativity.

Art Smocks

Prep parents, could you please send your child to school next Tuesday with their art smock labelled with their name; art smocks are for sale at Bob Stewarts.

I have tubs filled with spares so no one will miss out on art if they do not have theirs.

Art Captains

Elisa, Laura, Michael and Alex are excited to lead and promote the arts across the school. The Art Captains will be actively involved in the set and prop design and creation for our school musical. Elisa, Laura Michael and Alex will be running Sewing Club this term with Miss Karen and then Art Club next term with myself. Our art captains will have the opportunity to plan and run creative sessions for the students across the school to enjoy.

Art Classes outside of school

We have many talented artists at St Joseph’s! I love to hear about any art activities/ making students are doing outside of school. For students who are wanting to pursue art classes outside of school, I can highly recommend the following:

The Melbourne Studio of Art runs fabulous holiday programs which sell out very fast.
