German

Following a slight change in the order of curriculum, students will finish their weather reports at the beginning of Semester 2 in conclusion to our weather unit. They will then embark on the delayed Mein Monster unit, where they will need to draw on prior knowledge of colours, body parts, and numbers, and add to these new adjectives for appearance. They will manipulate modelled language to describe a monster of their own creation, adhering to the rules of word order and demonstrating an understanding of plurals, capital letters on nouns and using the present tense of haben (to have). Their work will be supported by the use of the Goethe Institut Felix und Franzi puppets, to encourage conversation and risk taking when speaking German. In Term 4, students will explore German food and traditions associated with Christmas.

Science

A double Science lesson each week will continue this semester so that students can continue to build onto their skills, knowledge and understandings to develop a scientific view of the world.

This term our main focus will be on Chemical sciences, exploring the changes of state between solid and liquid, as well as the range of properties of natural and processed materials. This will be followed next term by exploring our planet Earth, enabling investigations of the Earth, its resources, rotation and surface.

Throughout the semester students will develop their Science Inquiry Skills through posing questions, making predictions, planning and conducting scientific investigations, and measuring, recording and communicating their observations. Students will develop their writing skills by learning how to write an observational recount, recording what happened once they have completed their experiments and observations. Data collection to identify patterns and compare findings with predictions is also a vital component. Safety will be paramount when using all tools and equipment and students are encouraged to actively consider sustainability by being resourceful and not wasteful.

Please remind your child to check the Science Google Classroom weekly to see if they need to collect any items from home for our lessons.

Unfortunately, our Science excursion to the zoo had to be postponed due to the recent lockdown. It also looks like the fun Science incursion for Science week in a few weeks may need to be postponed due to the current COVID restrictions. Both these exciting events hopefully will happen once restrictions are relaxed more. Notices will be put in the school newsletter informing you when /if these events will occur.

Physical Education

This semester will begin with a focus on the Tokyo Olympic Games. What better way to develop and transfer children’s skills than across a variety of sports. Children will inquire into net and wall, striking and fielding and target games. They will continue to refine fundamental movement skills and apply movement concepts and strategies and create movement sequences demonstrating an understanding of effort, time, space and relationships. Through modified games of tennis, softball, badminton and ultimate frisbee children will continue to apply strategies to work cooperatively and apply rules fairly. Children will continue to be exposed to indigenous games and learn about Aboriginal and Torres Strait history and culture. They will reflect on new skills introduced both in written form and verbally, using technical vocabulary to communicate strategies to be successful. PE lessons will be based on the TPSR model ( Teaching Personal and Social Responsibilities) whereby children will aim to develop Respect, Effort, Self Direction, Leadership and transfer these skills outside of PE. At the beginning of Term 4 we will begin preparing for our annual Sports Day/Colour Run event, no doubt the biggest calendar event of the school year. Sports Day/Colour run will be held on Thursday 4th November. Children will be given opportunities to participate in track, field and popular tabloid events, ensuring children can feel confident, successful and participate with enthusiasm on the day. Sports Day supports children to build confidence, foster communication between peers and learn important social skills like turn taking, sharing and encouragement in a safe, supportive environment.

Active play continues every lunchtime in the gym, providing children with opportunities to be physically active, promoting social interactions in a safe, supervised environment.

Premier's Be Active Challenge

Children at LNPS have been busy keeping physically active in this uncertain time, participating in school events such as Virtual Cross Country and keeping active at home in lockdown. Congratulations to all the students who have returned their PBAC booklets to school. Don’t worry if you haven’t because there is still time.

The Challenge

The challenge is to participate in at least 60 minutes of physical activity on at least 5 days of the week for 4 or 10 weeks. After 4 or 10 weeks of daily recorded physical activity children will receive a medal. Simply record your progress on the booklet provided, sign and return your registration form to the front office. The Challenge finishes on the 24th September 2021, so there is still time.

Students are reminded to wear suitable clothing and footwear to all PE lessons to ensure their full participation.

Torrens PE lessons are on Wednesday.
